Frederick Cyril Bell exhibited three times at the Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery in the late 1930's. Bell was a highly regarded artist who painted landscapes and figures. He lived at 6 Peel Street, Langley Mill. Bell's work has sold for up to £1,500 at exhibitions. Anything further would be good. |

replied on: 1/26/2006 11:38:27 PM Some more I've managed to dig out..... "Bell lived at 6 Peel Street with his wife and son and later his adopted daughter. He worked for most of his life as a mechanic for MGO, a local bus company. His son, Cyril Bell, worked as a dental assistant for Mr Spittle on Cromford Road. His adopted daughter, Maureen Ellis, was from Birmingham but was evacuated at the beginning of World War II. Although Bell worked for most of his life as a mechanic his real passion was art; it was only as Bell was nearing old age that he received recognition for his work and he exhibited at a recognised gallery (Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery) for the first time in 1938, just a few years before his death. Bell's work is now collectable, a coastal oil was sold by Sherwood Forest Fine Arts at exhibition to an American collector for £1,500 a couple of years ago. We have a number of original oil paintings by Bell in our collection (the Sygun Museum of Wales). Bell is listed in the Dictionary of British Art - Volume V - British Artists 1880 - 1940 at page 51." |

replied on: 4/3/2006 4:21:47 PM This site gets everywhere. We have had a response to this query from a lady who doesn't even have internet access, and who is F.C. Bell's niece. I am hoping to get to see her after the Easter holidays, and view some of Bell's work, together with some old photos's of the area. Apparently Bell (or more likely Bell's son) was commissioned to paint a picture of Sutcliffe's shop on Station Road. I wonder if the picture is still in the family? It would be good to get sight (or a photo) of it. |

He is Craftsman Frederick C. Bell (32) a member of the Nottingham Society of Artists, had a self-portrait and an oil painting hung in the Royal Academy in 1941. In 1940 he exhibited at the Derby Exhibition of Contemporary British Art, and for a number of years his work was on show at the Nottingham exhibition. It was not at his workbench that I met him, but in a little concert hall, where he and other members of the unit concert party were at rehearsals. “I still keep up my painting.” Said Bell “Not that I have much spare time for it, but I make the best of things. Someone managed to find me a box of oil colours, and I suppose I’ve painted and sketched my way through the Middle East and the Mediterranean. “Sketches aboard ship, sketches of army life, war damage, portraits, landscapes – do you know, already I have two sketch books full. “After the war perhaps I’ll have a special little exhibition of my war-time collection.” He added reflectively. “If you have a minute or two spare sir, I will sketch you, too” laughed his companion. In addition to being an artist, Bell who is married is in peacetime a dental mechanic. |
