Here I watched Capt America and also The Dam Busters etc. I remember that we used to get cartoons followed by the feature film and on one occasion I saw The Brooke Bond Tea Chimps performing on the stage in between the films. Now of course we would not tolerate people exploiting animals in this way however it did not ever occur to me that it was cruel when I was a child. I have not lived in England for 36 years so please forgive me if my memory is a little rusty. Ian Brooke Bond Chimps |

replied on: 2/12/2006 9:36:29 PM Oh you youngsters-it was the "threepenny rush"! in my day! The cinemas in most towns had such a programme on Saturday afternoons-and the queues for admission were extremely long. Most of the programmes seemed to be more for the boys -Dan Dare, Hopalong Cassidy-and a "space" serial each week. If you were considered to be misbehaving, you were promptly hit around the head with a rolled newspaper by (who we thought was ) the manager of the cinema. |

replied on: 2/12/2006 10:34:23 PM The big feller with the rolled up newspaper went by the name of Joe. His vocabulary consisted of two words. 'BE QUIET' He wasn't the manager, although when a big production film was shown in the evening, he would be regaled in a bottle green suit with gold braiding, and a matching peaked cap. I think he got it second-hand from Hitler. Sometimes prior to the threepenny rush cartoon starting, they would have a short talent competition, with the odd brave tap-dancing girl enduring the cat-calls of the plebs in the audience. Does anyone recall such stars as Lash La Rue (no relation to Danny), Brick Bradford, Charlie Chase, The Three Stooges etc? And how about the lads' fantasy figure, the buxom 'Nyoka of the Jungle' Phew !! I sweat just thinking about her. |

replied on: 3/16/2007 10:22:48 PM just to put everybody straight here. it was indeed the threepenny rush. it was a tanner to go upstairs. There must have been some rich kids around heanor even in those days (1950's). does anybody remember seeing old mother riley films? i do remember joe with his rolled up newspaper.that would not be allowed these days would it. it's a shame really , because those days were better than they are now i believe. who else has similar beliefs? |
