replied on: 2/15/2006 8:47:03 PM Unfortunately my fathers family did not move to the Codnor and Loscoe area until post 1900, however I am interested in any information you may have on the names and dates of vicars, curates etc from this time and I was wondering if the register would shed any light on this. It is the history of a property on Denby lane that I am researching. I was given some information about this when I was a child but some of it is a bit foggy! Jacquie |

replied on: 2/15/2006 9:35:55 PM 10 Oct 1844 Bishop held consecration service at 11am -admission by ticket only at a cost of one shilling. 1844 there was no Jessop St, Wright St or Mill Lane in Codnor. 1927 Loscoe separated from Codnor to become a parish in its own right. Vicars Rev Henry Middleton 1844-1884 Rev W. Bates 1884 -Dec 1913 (R&H Dec 1913 gives report of his retirement-solomnized 730 marriages -the first one on Dec 26 1884) Rev S.Elder M.A. 1914 -1929 a native of Co Tyrone Ireland, became a Deacon in 1901, Priest 1902 Bristol. Inducted to Codnor St James 9 Oct 1914. Moved to Clay Cross 1929. His son Brian Elder was a well known estate agent in Heanor. I can remember reverend Middleton (the second one) from when I was a child. I wonder if it’s possible to find out when the first vicarage was built? I understand that it was after the Church. I think this because the house I was born in was apparently used by the first reverend Middleton before this. I think all the land between Codnor Denby lane and Springfield Avenue. (including the land where the church was built), originally belonged to this property. Jacquie |

Middleton This is a map of the land its in a book by Fred S. Thorpe “The Heritage of Codnor & Loscoe” also I’ve seen the same map on the wall (near the fire place) in the Ormonde Club “Marquis of Ormonde” Codnor Denby Lane. replied on: 2/16/2006 7:38:54 PM Thanks- I have the Fred Thorpe book and know of this sale plan. It is the buildings that were there before this that I am interested in. The land behind the gardens was consecrated To be used for future burials but in the 1970's some was offered for sale to the residents whose properties backed onto it. It was purchased on the understanding that it could never be built on. |

I have ordered a copy of the Sanderson’s map to see what is around that area earlier. If anyone knows or has a copy of the land before the sale plans where drawn up then that might also help. |

replied on: 8/8/2006 12:48:09 AM Thanks so much for the information on Clarkes' marriages at Codnor! Some of them are spelt Clark (no e) in some of the census returns. However, since my grandfather's middle name was "Clarke" then I have to presume the intention was for it to be spelt with the "e"! Thanks again! Just a couple of questions on all your help! 1) Did Mary Clarke(daughter of James and Amy)really get baptised in 1887? if so, this is quite late really! She would have been 18! 2)Did Amy Clarke die in 1901 the same as James? 3)At the time of George Fogg and Elizabeth Clarke's marriage, was George Fogg's father John a "cab" or a "lab" proprietor? If there is any more information about any of this branch of Clarkes, in particular baptisms and deaths/burials then I would be very grateful. Thanks |
