I know there used to be residential caravans to the back of the Napier-they were there in the 1950's and later-may even be there today. I believe Horace Pearson (scrap metal merchant) owned the land.
Will dig out info on the houses

Which are/were the "Charles Napier Houses?" I assume it's the short row of houses, in a similar architectural style to the pub itself, on the Langley Mill side of the pub. Or was it another row somewhere else, that I'm not aware of?

The caravans were run from a larger house, a bit further towards the Durham Ox, set back from the road.

Robert, the house you mention set back from the road was also owned by Horace pearson -that is where he went to live when they demolished his house opposite the Mill (Midland) which was attached to his scrapyard. Don't know if Horace is still with us, but his son still runs the scrap yard.Horace's sister owned the bungalow next to the Red House opposite the Napier(think she had it built on family owned land) There are a few houses on Cromford Rd adjoining the Napier, but I think at one time part of what we consider to be the pub were actually separate cottages-the part going into the car park.
1881 census -enumerater walking up Cromford Rd from Langley Mill -past Durham Ox (transcribed as Denholm Ct) there are several more houses -then it lists John Bagguley Publican Cromford Rd Sir Charles Napier, next door Edward Hull Shoe maker (and family) next door john Woolley Coal Miner (with wife and 8 children) addresses for Hull and Woolley -Cromford Rd Sir Charles Napier -then the addresses revert back to just Cromford Road-this indicates there were 2 cottages after but adjoining the pub. I'm sure I remember as you turned into the pub car park there were windows which were very low down to the road -and I think they were private cottages. I'll ask Auntie-she has frequented the Napier for 65 years!

Suz
The residential caravans you refer to behind the Charles Napier belonged to a Family named Smiths I used to deliver papers there in 1953/4 Tony Smith, one of the sons from a family there was in my class at Langley Mill Boys School. His parents,Grandparents and several other relatives had caravans on the site, when I used to collect the paper money on Saturday mornings I was invited in, at first a bit wary, but inside was full,China,Silver etc. and beautifully decorated.I believe they were a retired "Travellers" family.I think the land had something to do with Horace Pearson but I'm not sure.

Auntie's memories of Charles napier Houses:
There were about 4 cottages-still there today, adjoining The "Napier". Mrs Wooley lived in the first one and she retired and went to live in a ground floor flat on Aldercar estate-next to the railway line. Lois Hubball, who had been landlady of the Napier lived in the flat over Mrs Woolley. Mr Rowley lived in the cottage adjoining the Napier and that cottage eventually became part of the pub.

Frontcentre,
The society'ds book "Bygone Langley Mill" has a postcard (published 1909)of Cromford Rd-you can just make out the "Napier" and cottages in the distance -comment underneath is ....."Families living in this area included the Charlesworths, Oxleys, Harbons, WOOLLEYS, Beresfords, Newmans, Smiths, Masons, Hewitts and Hutsbys".

I have just learned that I had family living at 90 & 91 Cromford Rd in the 1901 census. 91 was G/grandads sister and #90 was my g/grandparents who history has living at 98 Cromford Rd until G/grandma died in 1955. Chances are that my Great/great grandparents were still living at 98 at this time but am just try to put the picture straight. Baptismal records confirm that the children were residing at # 98 when they were baptised - there were several done on the same day in 1904. Next door at the Napier was her D in Law who lived there until she moved into a flat mentioned in an earlier post by Suz. Incidently, she passed away last year.

My question is - was there a re-numbering of Cromford Rd - how can I get this info? or is 90 & 91 anywhere near the Durham Ox?

Appreciate any light you can throw on this.

The address of the Durham Ox in 1891 was 88 Cromford Rd.
My great Aunt died at 89 Cromford Rd in 1914 (when she was landlady of the Durham Ox)-which was next door to the "Ox"-her husband died at the Durham Ox in 1938, after which his son ran the pub.Family recollections are that my G Aunts son lived at the Ox after marriage and his parents moved into the cottage adjoining (they owned quite a lot of houses in that area) So I think 90/91 would be close to the Ox. I also had other family living at 86 Cromford Rd in 1891 and know they lived close to the Ox.
Just been to Langley Mill-the cottage next to the Ox is now numbered 164- but the road is numbered "evens" on the Ox side, "odds" on the other-I think the houses used to be numbered 1, 2, 3, 4-which would make sense next to the Ox being in the eighties when numbered this way -if you can follow my train of thought?????
I keep meaning to have a look at the numbering now!
