| Jennypeg Researcher Quote | Reply | | Loscoe Baptist posted on: 3/16/2006 7:15:22 AM LOSCOE BAPTISTS RIPLEY & HEANOR 1976 With reference to the interesting article on “Our Village – Loscoe,” which appeared in the “Ripley & Heanor News” last week, many village people are disappointed that more was not said about the history of the Baptist Chapel and its present-day activities and witness in the village. As far as we can trace the history of non-conformity in the village of Loscoe, Rev. John Hieron, rector of Breadsall, and Rev. Samuel Wright, rector of Heanor, were ejected from their livings under the Act of Uniformity in 1662 and owing to the passing of the five miles Act in 1665 were not allowed to preach within five miles of any borough or church where they had been ministers. John Hieron came to Loscoe and preached to small groups in his own house and those of other residents. He was licensed preacher of Loscoe in 1672 and died in 1682. The building itself dates from 1722, as recorded on a stone in the front wall of the chapel, which also has the initials F.T. believed to be those of Francis Tantum, with whose family, William Howitt was connected through his mother, and a Tantum charity was administered in the village until the 1920’s. The date 1848 records when it was rebuilt with a new frontage so that God’s worship and praise have resounded within its walls for the past 250 years, and today it is a thriving church with weekday activities, two ladies classes, a men’s fellowship and a very good choir. The first day school in the village was held in the old Baptist schoolroom in Furnace Lane, run as a private school by a Miss Carrington, of Heanor, and an old photograph shows the tables attached to the walls, which could be lowered and raised to act as desks. This schoolroom was rebuilt and opened in 1906. An interesting bit of history records that the streets of Loscoe were first lit by gas on 12 February 1892, the first lamp being lit by Mr. J. J. A. Woolley, and the children of the village were given a tea to mark the occasion. As regards the amenities needed in the village, one of the most essentials is a bus shelter to replace the one wrecked by vandals last year. |

THORPE PAGE 161 Baptist Chapel Loscoe The original Chapel was built in 1722, and a stone built into the front of the present building bears the inscription F. T. 1722”, which are believed to be the initials of Francis Tantum, an ancestor of Phoebe Tantum, mother of William Howitt. This stone was originally at the rear of the old Chapel. The old building was oblong in shape with the Gallery across the north end reached by a flight of steps on the outside, the pulpit being at the south end, Space at the front was used as a burial ground, and among those buried are: GEORGE LILLEY, HANNAH RATCLIFFE, WILLIAM RATCLIFFE, JEREMIAH BROWN, WILLIAM BOSTOCK, EMANUEL FIDLER AND ANN FIDLER. I've also found a wedding taking place there, from the marriage certificate: The baptist Chapel Loscoe 20th March 1898 George Lilley 22 years bachelor Insurance Agent Loscoe Grange father William Lilley coal miner + Elizabeth Hogg 23 years spinster Loscoe father Thomas Hogg deceased colliery overman witnessed by John Lilley and Myra Lilley but I've not seen any records for marriages baptisms or burials Jenny |

replied on: 3/16/2006 3:04:02 PM Hugh Wallis's Genealogical Web Site lists Baptisms -but Codnor just takes you to the IGI-alphabetical and grouped into churches, which is useful The only baptisms recorded for Shaw are a bit late for who you are looking for.
