I have since found out some more information and am posting a new message in the hope someone may recognise something. I have found a entry on the 1861 census for my GGG GF. His name was Henry Wilson and he was born in Winshill, Derbyshire. The entry shows him living at ???? Wood in Biddulph with his wife Sarah and his 4 children. Francis (My GG GF) Hannah, Charles & Elizabeth. All of the children were born in Shipley. His wife Sarah's maiden name was Kerry and she was born in Smalley on or around 1811 The 1871 Census shows only Henry and his daughter Hannah and son Charles living at Common (East0 ? Near a property/street known as The Carrs. Lots of interesting information. I am wondering if anyone reading this can help me add anymore pieces to my jigsaw. Great site and a big thanks to all the contributors IGW |

replied on: 3/25/2006 11:26:47 PM No sign of Henry on 1851, when he probably(by the birth of his children)would have been in Shipley. Possibly the Francis Wilson and family (crossed out and re entered)is the brother of your Henry-both born in same place -both Gamekeepers. 1861 this francis is in Ironville-still a game keeper. Kerry seems to be a popular name in Smalley Anthony Kerry b.abt 1800 kept the Rose and Crown,Smalley in 1871 There is also Edmund Kerry b.abt 1799 Smalley Benjamin Kerry b.abt 1797 May be worth checking out? |

replied on: 8/18/2007 3:21:04 PM I thought I might pop in and help out a little - Firstly, Sarah Wilson nee Kerry; did you get her name from the IGI or a marriage cert? The IGI gives it as 21 Sept 1846 at St Alkmunds, Derby, and gives their ages as 40 and 38 and both fathers as William; the GRO index ref is Sept 1846 Derby 19/471 Sarah's husband is given as Henry Wilson on Charles Kerry's pedigree for that Kerry line; unfortunately, he gives no other details. BTW, an error has crept in on the web page for Sarah; the source for her birth date is CK, not a memorial inscription - my apologies. This age fits with that given on the IGI marriage. Re the 1861 census - could that be Spink Wood?; and the 1871 census - I think that reads as Common (East), Biddulph There are a couple of deaths for Sarah that might fit - Dec 1863 Congleton 8a/179 (no age given) March 1870 Congleton 8a/219 (age given as 58 ie born abt 1812, which might be a little late; though given her recorded age in 1861 anything is possible) Henry & Sarah seem to have evaded the enumerator's net in 1851 and the only slight possibility I could find for Henry in 1841 is this, which might be a red herring, (there is another Henry & Jane in 1861/1871/ in Burton on Trent but he is not a game keeper) Ho 107/188/18 folio 8, page 9 Keepers Cottage, Heanor Common, Heanor Henry Wilson 30 Gamekeeper Jane Wilson 30 William 13 George 10 Henry 8 Samuel 6 John 4 The occupation and children's name seem a good coincidence! There are a couple of deaths in the Basford District that would fit with Jane dying and Henry re-marrying; March 1843 and March & Sept 1845. Henry is still in Biddulph in 1881, a retired gamekeeper, and there is a possible death for him Sept 1881 Congleton 8a/159. As to the whereabouts of Henry in 1851, I remember searching in vain, in the 1851 Shipley, for another researcher who I now cannot remember! However, I have found the parents of Henry and Francis - HO 107/191/2 Folio 8 page 10 Winshill William Wilson 70 gamekeeper Elizabeth Wilson 64 Francis 23 Elizabeth 20 Charles 18 If you would like any of these census images, contact me via my website, and I will send them on to you. Finally, I don't know if you have the baptisms of the children of Henry & Sarah; if not, you can find the transcription, along with those of Francis & Mary Ann, though Mary seems to have been entered instead of Sarah, as the mother of Charles - http://www.spendlove.co.uk/ Hope this has been of some help. |
