| Bruin Quote | Reply | | Langley Mill Working Mens Club posted on: 4/5/2006 9:51:24 AM Having been deep in thought the other night i began to reminisce about many a night in the working mens club throughout the early 1990s and its change to Langleys before the fire gutted the place. Anyone got any information or pictures of the working mens club in its former glory? Would be interesting to hear other peoples views on the place as i was only a youngster at the time. Bruin |

replied on: 4/8/2006 8:52:08 AM 28TH Dec 1928 CLUB DESTROYED BY FIRE AT LANGLEY MILL BIG BLAZE ON CHRISTMAS MORNING For many years past there has not been such a big conflagration as that witnessed on Christmas Day morning, between five and six o’clock, when gigantic flames of fire were seen belching forth from the Working Men’s Club on Station Road, Langley Mill. Heanor Fire Brigade was called to the scene shortly after six, and on their arrival found the Club and premises all ablaze. Fortunately an excellent supply of water was available, but in spite of their splendid exertions, the fire, assisted by keen wind, had got such a firm grip of the premises that it was impossible to save anything of value and the place was completely gutted, nothing but the bare front end walls being left to tell the tale. The premises stood upon about half an acre of ground and provided accommodation for a thousand members. The cause of the fire is a mystery, but the building is insured. Flames could be seen for miles around. Thousands visited the scene on Christmas Day and the police had difficulty in preserving order. Heanor Fire Brigade returned to their headquarters at eleven o’clock a.m. |
