| Patrisia Quote | Reply | | William Holbrook, stone mason posted on: 5/1/2006 6:04:04 PM This topic covers Smalley, Codnor & Heanor, so I am posting here rather than just Heanor. I have been helping a MEE/HOLBROOK/CARRINGTON cousin with her research and I just wondered if anyone might be able to fill in any details of where this chap might have been employed.....and yes Robert, she is part of your line <g> This is what I have about William - born 1852 in Horsley Woodhouse, bapt Smalley, s/o William Holbrook & Sarah North (in 1861 census) 1871 census, at Needham Street Codnor, in household of his uncle Charles Holbrook, born in Norton - I could do with some info about Uncle Charles. 1881 census, at Cromford Road, Heanor. 1891 census, at Smalley. 1901 census, at Nottingham Road, Eastwood, Notts and he is an employer by this time, as a monumental mason. Could he have been a jobbing or journeyman mason until he set up on his own? It would be nice to put some flesh on the bones, particularly as there 'may' be a Carrington stone mason connection. |

replied on: 5/1/2006 11:29:51 PM Eastwood & Kimberley Advertiser 18th May 1917 ONE OF TWO CODNOR BROTHERS KILLED PTE MAURICE WILLIAM HOLBROOK Codnor Sherwood Foresters Official information has been received by his widowed mother of the death in action of Pte Maurice Holbrook, which occurred in France on April 27th. He was 26 years of age, and the third son of the late Mr. J.C. Holbrook, monumentalist, of Codnor, and nephew of Mr. J.W. Rawlins, The Gardens Ripley. In civil life he, in partnership with his eldest brother, Pte, Charles Holbrook, carried on the business established by their father, and both joined his Majesty's forces under the Derby scheme. Pte Holbrook was a general favorite owing to his bright and cheerful disposition, and in his life as a soldier, he made light of all difficulties, and when writing home always refrained and from complaints of any hardships. Much sympathy has been expressed with his relatives in their great sorrow, and his officer said of him in a letter to his mother; "I always found him very willing and keen. I was very fond of him, and his death came as a great shock to me. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your sad bereavement, always remembering that he did his duty and led a good and clean life". |

replied on: 5/2/2006 8:12:08 PM Edited my post- magazine was 1948 not 1848!! Senior moment again!!!!! I remember the monumental stone mason on Upper Dunstead Rd in 1950's. The house was set back from the road and the front garden was paved and full of headstones, pots etc. |

replied on: 5/3/2006 12:08:57 AM I think the war memorial at Aldercar Church is a Holbrook. And the Holbrook masons were around long after the 1950's. The house on Upper Dunstead Road, close to the church, had memorial stones in the front garden I think. |

replied on: 5/29/2006 7:46:47 PM Patrisia I'm almost certain that Holbrook's had a yard on the main Nottingham Road at Hilltop opposite Chewton Street and in between No 191,a Gent's hairdressers and No.193 Johnson's Newsagents. The area that I remember from 1950-1960 is now a road,Wroughton Court, leading to Alexandra House nursing home, and I do remember a building contractor Alcock & Sisson either sharing or occupying the same premises.I have friends living in this area and hopefully they may come up with something more positive which I will pass on. replied on: 5/30/2006 4:54:33 PM My husband remembers Alcock and Sissons Yard in the place as described by PaulR-he used to play in the yard as a child. Tom Whittamores butchers was demolished to make way for the new road-making Johnsons newsagents now on the corner. There was a stone masons on Barber Street (which runs parallell to Nottingham Rd) which we thought was Holbrooks. A few houses down Barber St is a cul de sac which backed on to Alcock and Sissons -and there was a "walk way" to the builders yard. Maybe Holbrooks moved to Barber St -or maybe the address was Nottingham Rd . We think the building on Barber St which housed the stone masons is still there -will check in the next couple of days. |

replied on: 5/30/2006 8:38:18 PM Sue The cul-de-sac off Barber Street is Springfield Avenue. My niece lived at the bottom house on the left 15/20years ago and on the walk way you speak about a gate had been added and they had to have a key to get through down onto Hilltop.I'm not sure when Alcock & Sissons moved/packed up PaulR |

replied on: 5/31/2006 10:55:04 AM Springfield Avenue-thats correct - the building which housed the Stone masons is on the corner of the walkway and is still there-now D&s Construction -it is opposite no 48 barber St which is now a house, but years ago was a chip shop. - 50 plus years ago there was no gate. |
