replied on: 10/15/2007 8:00:19 PM Having been asked a question by email regarding Dr Thomson of Codnor, I thought I'd put my reply in this thread too... There are quite a lot of references to Dr. George Thomson. The 1912 Kelly's Directory lists "George Thomson, M.B., C.M.." The 1914 Bennetts Business Directory includes "George Thomson, M.B. Surgeon, Heanor Road." The only other doctor in the village at that time was Dr Eames. The 1941 Kelly's Directory also lists him: "Geo. Thomson, M.B., C.M. Aberd., physcn & surgeon, Heanor Road." Fred S. Thorpe, in The Heritage of Codnor and Loscoe (1990), has this to say: "It is said Dr. George Thomson, the village doctor, came to Codnor in 1901, and moved his practice to his new house, 'Fettercairn House,' on Heanor Road, in 1909. This house is across from Hollywell Avenue and now renamed 'Goadby House.' He was the first person in Codnor to own a motor car, and is remembered by an annual tea bearing his name, and given for the elderly people of Codnor. Dr. Thomson retired in 1945, Dr. G.R.Lunn (an ex naval officer) taking over the practice. "Coincidentally, there is an entry in the Book of Baptisms at St James Church dated 6th April 1873, which states that Henrietta Duguid Thomson was baptised. She was stated as being the daughter of John and Sarah Ann Thomson, the father being a surgeon." The Origin of Heanor and District Street Names (1992) by our Society, has an entry for Thomson Drive, Codnor: "George Thomson was the village doctor in Codnor, moving to the area in 1901. He owned the first motor car in Codnor, and, following the First World War, was the Chairman on the Codnor and Loscoe Memorial Committee, responsible for the lych gates and memorial tablet at the entrance to Crosshill cemetery. He retired in 1945 but the annual Thomson tea for the old people in the area perpetuates his memory. His son, Ross, also became a doctor and had a practice in Ripley for a time." A final reference comes in Around Ripley (1995) by Julie Potton and Janet North. This one is a photograph of George and his car! "Codnor's first motor car, a De Dion Bouton, which was owned by Dr. George Thomson. Dr. Thomson came to Codnor in 1901 and retired in 1945. This occasion was a tree planting to commemorate the coronation of George V. Dr. Thomson is at the wheel, with C.W. Ridyard by his side. The other passengers are Mrs Ridyard, Mrs G. Thomson, Mrs Eyre, Vera Ridyard, and Keith Thomson." |
