Heanor Observer
THE LATE MR THOS CROOK
THIRTY- TWO YEARS PARISH CLERK AT HEANOR
We regret to report the death of Mr Thomas Crook of Heanor, which took place on Wednesday April 16th at the residence of his daughter Mrs E.P. Cope at Codnor, at the age of 75 years, after a period of failing health, leaving a widow and two daughters to mourn his loss.
Mr Crook, who was a native of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, came to Heanor in 1891, being in the employ of the Midland Railway Co, but he will be best remembered as Parish clerk at Heanor Parish Church to which post he was appointed in 1898 by the late Rev. (Later Canon) C.E.L. Corfield, serving under the Rev. Ashley Corfield and Rev. Gilgryst, up to five years ago when he retired.
During his 32 years of office Mr Crook officiated at 1,676 marriages, 3,089 burials and 4,040 Baptisms, the latter including two children of vicars of the church. During this time eight new stained glass widows were placed in the church, and in 1902 the number of bells was increased from five to eight. In his younger days he was an ardent Sunday School teacher for many years and an active member of the Church of England men’s society also secretary of the P.S.A.

Thanks for that Jennypeg

Currently scanning and OCRing the parish magazines that we have (taking a while as I have to do a proofread of the files once OCR'ed). They will be available on the website once I launch it - should be launched before the end of the year (25 years since "modern" rebuild competed, 140 years since the laying of the faoundation stone of the "Victorian" build). Do you want a copy of the files before then to go with you other 'local rags'? A lot of it is more church orientated but there are sections in each where they comment on local news.

RRMee, there is a series "The history of the Parish - N Ball" N Ball if I remember was a "fellow of the Royal historical society" - sorry can't remember the exact title as only saw it glancingly in on the of the older records. Would you want a copy of the completed file or would you prefer it posted on the forum - it's quite an interesting set of articles.

Tempus

An emailed copy would be great, but by all means place a copy on here too.

Nathan Ball also wrote a history of Codnor Castle, which was serialised years ago in the Society's newsletter.

Knew I had seen it somewhere - in June (1890) magazine :

"Mr. Nathan Ball, who writes the interesting "History of our Parish " in the pages of our Magazine, has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society."

Heanor Observer
26th June 1930
Memorial to Canon Corfield
Window unveiled in Heanor Church
The memory of the late Canon Corfield who died in 1926 is still very fragrant in Heanor and district and it is a matter for satisfaction that the church at which he laboured as vicar for a quarter of a century now possesses an adequate memorial of one whose name will ever be associated with Heanor Church life.
The memorial takes the form of a beautiful stained glass window, above what is affectionately known as the children’s corner. It represents in three choicely coloured and artistic panels “One Fold and On Sheperd.” And is a very fine addition to the lovely stained glass windows for which the church is noted.
The inscription at the base of the window is as follows:
“In ever loving memory of Claude E. L. Corfield M.A. Hon Canon of Southwell, and afterwards Prebendary of Wells who was a faithful and zealous vicar from 1886 to 1911 and a devoted friend of little children erected by parishioners and friends Messrs W. Morris & Co were the artist.

Found a referance in the PCC records from the 1980 that they were discussing some of the stained glass being moved from Fletcher factory and to look into donating it to Marlpool church.

I know this is a silly thing to ask as a local boy, but who/where are Fletchers? The name ring a bell but I can't rememeber where I've seen it.

Hi Ian,

No success so far with locating what happened to them.

The photos we have are on the first page of this thread below the Cattle window, listed at the time as "unknown".
lol.. and rather a bad guess as to what it was from the photo.

We have managed to get hold of the original cartoon for the window - if you send an e-mail to Robert I can send you a copy - I can't put it on the thread due to copywrite restrictions.

Hello again Ian (and Robert),

Sorry - the ultimate embarrassment for an archivist/historian, I've got two of the windows confused.

The Mayfield one is one of the two that has not yet been located, and that was referred to as "unknown" on page 1. I realised the error when I picked up the cartoon and thought I had mis-labeled it.

The Robertson window was on the North side so was never affected by the Rebuild. It is still in the same place. No photo is on the thread as I am in the final stages of the church website which has a page for each window - hoping to have it launched by Saturday / Sunday.

I will send Robert a copy of one of the photographs for you. Afraid it will be a low quality photograph as the high resolution image is still in progress... the window has to be photographed in sections and then pieced back to together in an image program.. the Robertson window is driving me nuts because it has a large section of red cloak that can only be photographed in the early hours during winter.. so got to wait a few months to finish it.

Tempus,
I’ve found a dedication of a window at the Parish Church “Hannah the mother of Samuel presenting the child to Eli the priest” by Messrs Willis & Jones of Birmingham have you got this information?
