Driving through Langley Mill this morning, I notice that there is a new pub. Well, it looks just like an old pub I remember and it is in exactly the same location, but I don't recognise the name "Inn the Middle." Just what do these marketing prats think they are going to achieve? For the next 20 or 30 years, all the locals are still going to call it the Erewash Hotel. And how many non-locals are likely to visit more than once. To be fair, the renovation looks good from the outside (I will pay a visit during the summer), but the change of name was totally unnecessary. It's only a couple of hundred year's of heritage thrown down the drain! I must stress that all my posts, but especially this one, express my views, and not necessarily the views of the History Society. |

Inn the Middle
replied on: 9/7/2006 10:54:52 AM When the "Erewash" (as it will always be to me) was being renovated, the rumours being put out to locals was that it was to become a traditional pub again, not (what we would call) a youngsters pub. Now it's opened as Inn the Middle complete with Karaoke nights etc. We'll never learn -rumours are exactly that!!! |

replied on: 9/7/2006 12:10:14 PM The reason for the name 'Inn the Middle' is because of the landlady that now owns it. She ran the Great Northern in Langley Mill and then Que Sera in Heanor so she must of thought it was a clever name, i think it is more personal to her. I must admit that i don't like the name either and i wouldn't have picked it but she has done it up nice and it seems to be doing quite well. But im another person that will always call it the Erewash. |

replied on: 9/9/2006 10:58:09 PM I must admit I too was sceptical about the "new Erewash" but I must say these days I don't drink in langley mill pubs but this one does have my vote.Pat and Stuart(the proprietors)have done a fantastic job on the place and plan to turn several of the old out-buildings and former function room into guestrooms next year. The place also now boasts a great court-yard style beer garden which is great in the warm weather. As for the name - a large mirror in the lounge depicts an image of notts in one direction and derby in the other with the Erewash "Inn The Middle" I am pleased that Langley Mill now has a pub again that is of a high standard |

replied on: 9/10/2006 8:18:11 AM It sounds like the pub has improved considerably - congratulations to the licensees and whoever did the renovation. But it doesn't alter my views on the name change though! |

replied on: 12/23/2006 12:58:23 PM The carvery is fab on a Sunday! I think whilst we don't like change, a name change was necessary on this occasion. The OLD Erewash had declined into such a state that the new owners needed to escape the old image of the pub, not to mention smartening up it's reputation, which was terrible before the name change! |
