Grandma had a factory on this site and used to do "Chevvening" (embroidery on stockings) probably for the mills in Belper. I would be very grateful for ANY Information on anything I have mentioned Many Thanks PAULR |

replied on: 9/30/2006 12:11:40 PM Checked trade directories for 1881, 1895,1912 and 1932, no mention of the Knife and Steel. Could this be reincarnated as the New Inn, which is mentioned 1881, 1895, 1912 and 1932 ? From the Kelly's 1932, Walter Weston cowkeeper and Mrs M Kyte fried fish dealer. Fron Kelly's 1912, Mrs Matilda Weston cowkeeper. From Bulmer's 1895, Frank Weston, owner Woodside Farm and 3 framework knitters (no addresses but named). From Kelly's 1881, Robert Weston. shopkeeper along with 3 nailmakers but no fabric/cloth tredes mentioned. regards Phil |

replied on: 9/30/2006 2:22:00 PM Thanks Jenny I'm interested in anything connected with Horsley Woodhouse during my search.I do know that in the Horsley Woodhouse web site photographs there is one of the "original Knife and Steel" this supposedly was in The Crescent but no date. I'll have to delve deeper because this is not in the position which I have been led to believe. Regards PAULR |

replied on: 9/30/2006 3:09:52 PM Thanks Phil for all your interesting information.I think the Weston's Walter,Matilda & Frank may have been a different family but Robert could have been Grandma's brother.Your info on the New Inn sounds good because I remember this in the 40's before it was re-named later as the Knife and Steel, this was the pub on the right going towards Four-Lane ends, which has now been converted back to a dwelling.I have said on a previous post that the original Knife and Steel is shown in a photograph on the Horsley Woodhouse web site,it's position being in The Crescent, not in Main Street,as I have been led to believe, the New Inn seem's more likely to be the one that I'm looking for. I do remember the Mrs.M.Kyte.(Maggie)Fried Fish Dealer who you mention her chip shop which is still there was directly opposite the site of my Grandparents house Cavell Cottage, with Grandmothers factory around the back. Many Thanks PAULR |
