For no one knew the location of the locks which they fitted, or if those still remained. Now half the mystery has been solved by a chance discovery that has revealed historical documents of some value. And appropriately enough, this discovery was due in part to the fact that a historical exhibition is at present on display at St Lawrence. Mrs Christine McMullen, wife of the vicar there, told the “News” exactly what had happened. “In preparation for the exhibition, my husband was doing some cleaning out when he came across a metal box in the false ceiling of the vestry,” she said. “The box was locked, but someone came up with the bright idea of trying one of the keys in the safe, and as it happened one of them fitted. “Inside were some old official documents, such as bills, which dated back to 1814. The find was of particular interest because the church was rebuilt in 1868.” ANALYSED At present the documents are still being analysed, but the exhibition, which starts today (Friday) and goes on until Wednesday, contains plenty of fascinating items. “The church has a lot of valuable documents which are kept over at Matlock,” continued Mrs McMullen. “They’ve been brought over and people can trace their ancestors through the archives, which chart baptisms, marriages and funerals back to about 1500. “Going back even further to the 12th century is a list of vicars.” But the church isn’t the only concern who are putting items on display, local crafts and industries will have items there, and in addition to carvings, embroidery and other needlework there are writings and poetry. Heanor Historical Society are displaying a selection of old Heanor photographs which date back considerably. Refreshments will be served, and various schools have already planned visits. And the whole thing is tied up in a souvenir brochure compiled by Rev. Ronald McMullen. But now the question is……………. Where does that remaining key fit? |
