I haven't heard of it before but I came across the following in the parish magazine for June 1890 : "The opening of the Recreation Ground last month was quite an event in the history of Heanor. The Rector, as Vice-President and formerly president of the Templars' Club, performed the ceremony in the unavoidable absence of Mr. Mundy..." What were Mr Mundy and the Rector up to in their spare time? |

replied on: 10/16/2006 7:42:35 PM It is one of the two dangerous subjects, politics and religion. I suspect the Heanor Templars were a group of Roman Catholic well to dos. Alfred Miller Mundy had FreeMasonry connections via the Erewash branch. At the moment it is beyond me how it all fits together but there must be some connection or links between the two organisations. regards Phil |

replied on: 10/17/2006 9:21:36 AM I must be going barmy so I've delved into the subject. The Knights Templar are a division of the Freemasons. The Miller Mundy family are connected with the Mundy Grove Lodge. This lodge used to meet at the Shipley Boat Inn and was founded in 1844. The link for the Mundy Grove Lodge is http://www.derbyshiremason.org/long_eaton_hall/lodges.htm#Mundy%20Grove. The home page is http://www.derbyshiremason.org with names, offices held and contact details. Historical records are held and requests for information may be dealt with positive results. I have no connection with the Freemasons. The information above was supplied by a pig headed desire to find it because I knew I had found it once upon a time on the net.
