| tempus275 Quote | Reply | | Any researchers of the Heanor Ray family? posted on: 10/12/2006 9:05:31 PM This one is a bit of a long shot, but worth a try. There is referance in some of the paperwork at St Lawrence to one of the surviving windows being medieval... but sadly PROOF is missing. I know that the window was installed in memory of one of the members of the Ray family, it would have been installed somewhere between 1855-1868 and paid for the Ray family ("a historical handbook to St Lawrence's Heanor" claims 1868). Unlike the other windows that have been moved that had glass "plaques" showing their dedication that were removed I have found no information saying that the Ray window had one. Has anyone done any research into the Ray family? Do we know if any of their accounts from that period survive and have locally heald transcripts that may shed some light on whether they bought it from a stained glass company that just did the window in a medieval style or if the window was purchased from another building / company that could point to it having an earlier date? Its a mystery that's slowly driving me nuts... it would be wonderful to be able to officially say that the "modern" section of the church contains a medieval window. At the moment we can only claim "it's possible", it would be delightful to have actual proof due to it's close position to the Corfield Window its largly been overlooked... poor thing |

replied on: 10/17/2006 10:35:48 PM That's an interesting one Jennypeg, which paper was that from? It does prove what we knew about the "Gibbs" window being the only one that survived the rebuild. Pity it doesn't say where she got the window from, sadly the Church magazine which normally go into quite a bit of information about the windows hadn't started at that stage. |

replied on: 10/18/2006 7:46:27 AM Mr John Ray died 27th December 1867 so the New Year Tea that was planned was postponed, there was the inauguration of the New Town Hall, the opening of the New Church with a list of who bought bibles etc, Marlpool Mill was up for sale and then for let, there was an explosion of gas at Ripley Church and the New Foundry at Langley Mill (Turner and Pender) was blown down by the bad storms! The year was 1868 the paper “Ilkeston Pioneer”. Jenny |

replied on: 10/18/2006 10:21:54 PM I don't suppose they describe the Church before the rebuild do they? The only description we have so far is Cox's and his seems more based on documents that he has been seen rather than a visit to the site. I'm finding conflicting reports so far about the condition of the old church, one side says that Corfield loved the old building but by the time he came as vicar it was too far gone to save, the other says that he couldn't stand the building and was glad of the excuse to demolish it. Personally from reading his report on finding the tomb with the knights in it under the church I'm inclined to believe the former, but a contempory account would be interesting. |

replied on: 10/19/2006 8:35:09 AM 26th Dec1867, I/P, Heanor as the old parish church is now being rebuilt, the service of late have been held in the National School Room, but owing to the severer nature of the weather, and the vicars desire to make his congregation comfortable it has been thought necessary to hold the services in the Town Hall, at which place they will be held on Sunday next, the 29th inst, for the first time, we understand there will be a public tea on new years day, after which the worthy vicar will deliverer a lecture on Nineveh illustrated by diagrams when it is hoped all who possibly can will attend. 5th November 1868 Ilkeston Pioneer Opening of Heanor Church On Monday the 2nd of November, the parish Church was re-opened after a complete restoration. The old Church was very much dilapidated, and unsuitable to the wants of the church. It was a plain building erected in King Stephen’s time. In its vaults lie many of the men who bore famous names in the olden day. The Grays and Zouches, of Codnor, and the Lowes and Strelleys, and Vavacours and Mundys, of Shipley, were buried here.
