Coal Mines in 1811
posted on: 10/28/2006 3:45:14 PM

The list is extracted from A General View of the Agriculture and Minerals of Derbyshire by John Fairey, published in 1811. The book is in the Google Books collection but is not available for downloading. The text is availabe for viewing by the page.

Aldercar (Ouler Car[old spelling possibly a topic for anther thread]), near Langley Mill in Heanor (formerly)

Beggarlee, 1m NE of Eastwood

Benty-field, 1/4m E of Codnor, Smithey Coal

Codnor, nether park 1 1/2m NE Codnor

Codnor, upper park 1 1/4m NNE Codnor

Eastwood, 1/2m N of town (formerly W and NW) in Nottinghamshire

Geenwich, 2/3m E of Ripley and 1 1/4m NW of Codnor

Hallambridge (or Nutbrook) 1m N of Stanton by Dale (formerly)

Heanor 1/2m SE of the town Brasses (formerly S SW and W of the town)

Langley, S of the Houses 1/2m E of Heanor

Milnhay, 1m ENE of Heanor (formerly)

Shipley 1m SSE of Heanor Brasses

(formerly) denotes a colliery not in production possibly recently closed before 1811. Smithey Coal and Brasses are two of the many seams worked. Where a colliery has more than one location it shows that new shafts have been sunk, possibly due to ventilation or underground roadway problems. I would take the location of the church being the place to take compass bearings from to locate a colliery.

regards Phil
