replied on: 11/7/2006 4:44:25 PM I really struggle to see how the death could have been anyone other than our WRB Snr. A good find. I have emailed the seller of the picture (link above) to see if he can tell us any more, since he quotes the Codnor conection. Sue (and everybody else!) This thread has been a fantastic demonstration of how a query can be pulled together really quickly. Many thanks for all your effort. I have passed the link to this thread to my original enquirer (WRB Jnr's granddaughter), who will, I hope, find it of immense use. Robert |

replied on: 11/9/2006 5:11:57 PM An email from the original enquirer: "Robert. What can I say!!!!! I was quite overcome and absolutely delighted to receive such amazing information about WRB and his family, from both you and the team of genealogical detectives!!! Thank you very much - a tremendous outcome and in such a short space of time - the marvel of the Internet. I salute you all!!!! I did telephone my Aunt in Cornwall, to try and gain any further information. She did tell me that her father was born on the 14th Sept. 1871: but not sure when he died! We now know it was 1950. Her Grandfather lived at Northwall House, The Butts. Shaw St., Worcester and Auntie Nellie (WRB's youngest daughter) she remembers well. This just confirms your facts!!!She says she has a catalogue of paintings by both WRB snr and WRB jnr somewhere!! She has a newspaper article from the Derby Evening Telegraph dated 2nd May 1949 mentioning her father, so I will look into that. As a matter of interest, William jnr and Ethel Mary Rodway-Barnes had three children: Minnie Theresa Rodway-Barnes (my mother) the eldest: born in 1908, who married Denis Alfred Powell in 1938 and had three children: Jonathan Rodway-Barnes Powell: Judith Susan Powell (twins born in 1942) and Julia Vanessa Powell(me) in 1946. My mother died in 1993. William and Ethel's second child ,Julia Ethel, born in 1910: married Thomas Craske Rising at Crosshill, Derbyshire: now living in Cornwall (no children). Helen Mary Rodway-Barnes born in 1912 now deceased (no children). I believe my brother has a collection of swords, sabres and dirks, handed down to him by his grandfather and a gold medal for Art.I am visiting my Aunt at Christmas so more facts might become available!!! In the meantime,thank-you, once again. Vanessa." |

replied on: 11/10/2006 8:30:49 AM thankyou I've enjoyed the mission! No luck with the Memorial Inscription for Codnor but he could still be buried there! And the 1905 Ripley and Heanor I had no luck there but your Pcless friend might find something I missed also it may have been reported in another paper, if they bought and read a different paper like the “Derby Evening Telegraph dated 2nd May 1949” Jenny |

replied on: 11/25/2006 2:08:57 PM Here's an interesting news item from 'The Gazette' November 2nd 1950. CODNOR Rodway-Barnes Paintings at Welfare Several paintings by the late William Rodway-Barnes, art master at Heanor Grammar School for more than 30 years, are part of the decoration of Codnor Miner's Welfare. The pictures were presented to the institute by Mr Rodway-Barnes shortly before his death aged 78 last July. Among those displayed is a self portrait of the artist at work, which was painted this year. 'The Opium Pipe', a large mural in oils, caused considerable comment in art circles when it was exhibited at the Grafton Galleries in London. In this picture, the artist depicts an Eastern dancer wreathed in opium fumes, symbolising the effects of the drug. Impressive paintings of Shining Cliff Woods, Ambergate and other Derbyshire scenes, are also displayed in the institute. I wonder where they are now? Are any of our readers members of Codnor Miners Welfare? |

replied on: 3/27/2008 6:18:09 PM jenks, jago probably meant are you interested in details of a painting - not interested in buying it!!!! What I find interesting about jagos painting is that it was in oils - Rodway Barnes snr usually specialised in water colours. |

replied on: 3/29/2008 1:18:18 AM Hi Sue, Thank you for the link to the Omega studio -I have emailed them and asked if they will correct the name of the artist and also the history they have given They seem to have father and sons dates of exhibiting added together. they have William Rodway barnes as active from 1850-1919 -impossible for it to be one person! Junior was b. welll after 1850 and snr died 1905!!!!! |
