Can anyone please give me any information on Fords of Heanor? What type of business was/is it and is it still there !! My mother used to work there, I am told, and I would like to contact them if they are still there. Many thanks, Sue
ps. Please see Family History forum for further details, any help will be gratefully received, Sue

Fords stopped trading in the area 5-10 years ago. The shops I remember were in Ilkeston, Eastwood and Heanor-the heanor shop always seemed to be the "main one" The Eastwood shop is now a Chinese restaurant, but at the moment I can't remember what the Heanor Shop is now -it was on the High St not too far from Woolworths
I remember them trading since 1950's- maybe even before then-selling good quality underwear, home furnishings, children's toys at very reasonable prices.
Although it was a "cut price" shop-the shop was always very smart, clean and spacious and staffed by very nice helpful assisstants.

Thanks for the reply. I am actually trying to find my mother, I'm not sure when she worked there, but it was after 1960. Her name is Nellie Rigby and she will be 84 now, I believe she is still in the Heanor/Ripley area. Sue

Sue,
Have you thought of putting an ad in the Ripley and Heanor Advertiser?
Or even a visit to Social Services - they may be able to tell you if she is in a retirement home?

Suzard - trust me, Ive tried every way under the sun over the last 20 years ! Its really hard with data protection, even producing birth certs etc to prove my relationship means nothing. Soc Serv don't want to know, Ive phoned dozens of care homes, but they can't tell you anything. Trawled bmd records, electoral rolls, put ads in shops, papers (not the one you mentioned, however ), Salvation Army - I just get nowhere. I only discovered this site yesterday, so will post a 'looking for' message on the approp. forum. You never know! The problem is, I haven't seen her since I was 6, and thats 47 years ago. My parents divorced and I never saw my mother again. Sadly, time is running out as she is 84 now. Thanks for your help, will try the Heanor/Ripley paper.

Iceboy, that is so kind, thank you. I live in Blackpool, but visit Derby about 4 times a year, stay in Biggin Village. My mother is the adopted daughter of Tom and Fanny Brown, of Denby Village, and was born 1922. She married a chap called Harry Pardner in 1941, but they divorced and she married my father in 1951. I would think my mother worked there after she and my dad divorced, so the manageress would possibly know her as Nellie Rigby, but at least you have the names of Pardner and Brown if you need them. My mother left Derby and came to Blackpool in the late 40's, but I believe she returned to Derby in the early 60's. I have checked death records up to the end of 2004, and found nothing. The last I heard of her whereabouts was in 1996 after I put a postcard in a shop in Ripley, I got a phone call from someone who knew her from years ago to say she was in a care home in Ripley, but they didn't know which one. As you will have read in my last post, Soc Serv have been no help, neither have calls to all the care homes I could find! I appreciate your help.

Sue,
Are you certain she didn't marry again?
If the person who contacted you was someone who worked with your mother she would probably always call her "Rigby"
If you have her exact date of birth we could check the death records for you -just using the name "Nellie"-as you probably know more recent death records also give the exact date of birth.
Do you have any half siblings who we may be able to trace and may have more information?
There are also free newspapers delivered in Heanor/Ripley areas which you could put an ad in -especially mentioning the "Fords" connection - I would expect there are lots of people who would remember her from Fords if only they had their memories jogged.

Suzard, I have checked all the marriage and death records up to the end of 2004, and there is no trace of either for her. I know her exact date of birth which is 14-4-1922, I have her birth cert. also marriage certs. In trying to find my mother, 2 years ago I found a sister, born 3 years before me, but she was adopted at birth and until I found her, she never knew anything at all about our mother. I have no other siblings - have checked all the births too, until my mother would have been 55. Which is how I found I have a sister!
I will look on the net for the free paper details, thanks for that idea, Sue

Those are the free papers...but it's hit and miss if they get delivered or not! Not had the shopper for years and live in Heanor, although the Trader is more regular again now!

The woman who works in Tesco is the woman who used to work at Heanor Fords!

Fords was the sort of place your mum took you for being good...you could buy toys/books etc quite cheaply, not to mention a good line in clothes! Cheap ones of course!
