They were Wheelwrights. I believe in the early part of the 20th century it became a Grocery store which was still run by members of the family well into the 1950s. The original Shorthose family lived at no 4 Church Street (now it is renumbered as 138 and is known as The Woodfield Club) but I believe the Forge would have been almost next door. There seems to have been a Forge on Bridge Street but I am not sure if this would have been say a back entrance or perhaps a totally different place altogether. Any help/photos would be much appreciated. Thanks. Christina |

replied on: 11/15/2006 11:21:18 AM The blacksmith's forge at the top left of Church street (facing Heanor Road) was there until about three years ago. It appeared to be used as outbuildings for the shops behind which it stood - in fact between the shops and Woodside Club. The shops and outbuildings were completely destroyed earlier this year and 'Executive Dwellings' cram the site. In my Grandad's day miners took pick blades to be sharpened at this forge. The forge on Bridge Street: There was a jitty to one of our allotments which ran alongside the forge and the old bellows still leaned against the brick forge and tools still hung, rusting, on the walls. There was a huge pear tree behind it from which the old lady at the adjacent house sold a basket of pears for a few pence.
