The following interesting letter has been received by Mr and Mrs J Farnsworth(from their son Pte Wilfred, who is serving in the Expeditionery force:" Please excuse my long silence, for I have not had chance of writing lately. However, I am still in the best of health. How are you all getting on and have you heard from bert lately?( Bert to whom he refers is the son of Mr and Mrs E Warren, who is now lying in one of the military hospitals wounded). It was hard luck about Corporal West (a memorial service for whom was held at the langley Mill Weslyan Church on Sunday week-as reported)and I am now the only one from langley Mill left in our battalion, unless Sergeant Wright can be counted as one.Well I am very pleased indeed to know that so many friends from the chapel think of me. Please give them my heartfelt thanks. It does cheer you up a bit knowing so many are wishing you a safe return, and I am sure we can do with it, as we are in a "hell on earth" now. We saw a german aeroplane fetched down by one of ours on Sunday, and saw the machine which dropped 500yards from us. The worst part, however, was to hear the dull thud of the young officer, who jumped out.At a guess I should say we saw him fall half a mile and drop 50 yards from us. Have also seen some prisoners and they will be pleased when it is all over. The british Bulldogs are of a very sympathetic nature and loaded them with cigarettes and one thing or another. You ought to have seen our tea last Sunday, what consisted of first course: jelly,2nd: peaches, 3rd: sardines, 4th: strawberry jam and ended up with pastries and cakenot forgetting tea with "lait condense*(condensed milk) latest news here is that 'Willie' is broke, can't we give him a sub? he shall have all my ammunition if he cares to show himself, but it would be through my rifle.Being in the signallers I do not do any firing now, only when someone is showing very plainly. Np doubt you are asleep now as it is 1 am and I am doing my turn at the telephone. Outside it is crack, bang etc. My mates are asleep, so you see the notice we take of them. Am enclosing a postcard given to me by an Inndian Artillery Corporal, which I think was given to him by a French Young lady"

Mr Geo. yeomans, Midland Railway signalman at Buckland Hollow, received the following interseting letter last week from Pte W. Throssell of Upper hartsay:
"Just a few lines to let you know I am going on alright. It is a bit livlier out here than fishing, although I would love to have an hour or two with you. We had a bit of fishing the other day. I belong to a bombing party, and we got a bomb or two and went down to the sea beach and blew one or two up. We got a nice dab, but had to give it to the officers. I am writing this while the bullets are flying, and the best way out here is to keep ducking, else it is all up with you. We now have Will Fox out here. He came with the last lot of reinforcements, and is in the pink of condition, but he would sooner be in France, as they get something to eat out there and we don't here. Please excuse writing as there are so many flies about."
Pte Thossall worked at hartsay Pit . A strange coincidence is the meeting of Throssall and Fox, who are brothers in law. Pte Fox came from India with his regiment. After a short stay he went to france and fought in some of the fiercest engagements, and was seriously wounded. Whilst on furlough he married Throssall's sister. When Fox rejoined the colours he was dispatched East.
