Would you watch the Christmas lights being turned on from the Tower?
posted on: 11/19/2006 8:49:26 PM

As part of the rebuild jubilee next year we were wondering about opening the tower at St Lawrence to a limited number of people (due to the weight and view) to be able to see the turning on of the lights from above. We would like to know if people would be interested or not.

Tempus, wouldn't it be better to ask for comments rather than voting!!
In my opinion polls are boring -comments give a much better feed back.

Even though Robert likes your buttons!!!!

No, please, not another poll!!! I'll comment on the subject! LOL
It sounds a wonderful idea to watch the lights from the tower, but to make an informed decision further information would be required.
What area would you see from the tower?
Size of area available? Howmany people (approx) would fit into this area? How many steps would have to be climbed- what is the ease/difficulty of access?
At what height would the viewing area be?
I really think this information is necessary, especially as places would be limited -otherwise you may "award" people places who would find height/acess or some other reason making a visit not possible for them.
Plus-giving this information would give an insight into what the tower is like internally for those who may not be able to visit , but are interested in the interior

lol.. I was going to try and be up the tower for this years turning on of the lights so that I could take some photos to give a rough idea of the view.

Steps... erm... think it is about 89... I'll have to recount, I know I wrote the number down somewhere.

As far as a look at the interior goes for none visitors it should not be too hard to do some photos, but there is not much to see... lol, literally in the case of the bell chamber as they forgot to install a light when they rewired, might see what the flash call illuminate though...

Hmmm.. will have to find where I put my camera..

It's not the easiest climb to the top of the tower, especially, if I remember right, that final step from the stairs onto the roof. I can't remember what was odd about it, but I remember it was difficult. There is a good view from up there - somewhere I have a collection of photos I took a couple of years ago. Obviously you can see the Market Place area, which would be the point of this exercise, but also down Hands Road to the Leisure Centre, across the Erewash Valley, and across Newlands. Not spectacular, but worth a view - only really for the relatively light-footed I would say.

lol... hmmm... maybe new a way of Christmas exercise..

"Over done it on the Christmas turkey? Run up the tower 5 time will burn of x number of calories"

"Want to build up your arm muscles, wind up the clock / Ring the bells"

There could be a whole tower exercise routine.

Crackin idea!! I for one would love to get chance to get a few pics from the tower and see the lights turned on.
As for the exercise regime well...After completin the 5x tower climb etc I think me and a few others would soon be taking PERMANENT residence up within the church grounds and I don't mean above ground level :-)LOL:-)

I don't think I would manage the climb, but would enjoy seeing pics.
