Although this has nothing at all to do with the subject, the following information was written in "YESTERDAYS IN WOODHOUSE" By Peter Lynne,B.A. the Vicar. Easter 1961. On October 6th 1881, the Foundation Stone of Horsley Woodhouse Parish Church was laid by Mrs Sitwell of Morley. The architect was F.J.Robinson Esq., of Derby, and the contractors Messrs Walker and Slater. The cost was £1,850.much of the money was given by Mrs Susannah Holcombe (nee Sitwell) and the rest was obtained by public subscription. On May 30th 1882 the Church was consecrated by the Bishop of Litchfield, and dedicated to St.Susannah. The latter being an Eastern Saint of the 10th century. There is no doubt that the choice of dedication was influenced by the name of the generous patroness. It was fortunate that there is a saint of this name, though there is not much known about her. Apparently she was a lady of the Eastern Orthodox Church who was canonised because, rather than marry an unbeliever, she chose to be banished and live the life of a solitary. PaulR |

Naming of Churches
replied on: 2/17/2007 1:12:54 PM Does anyone know the origin of the names of the Chapels on Cromford Road at Langley Mill? The one on the corner of Argyle Street was always known as the "Prims" but the Central Methodist Church on the corner of Gladstone Street started life in 1886 as the Langley Mill Primitive Methodist Church. I was led to believe that the "Prims" split and moved to Argyle Street, but when and why was the name changed on the Gladstone Street Chapel? The Wesleyan Church (1876) on Station Road/Pottery Lane belonged to the United Methodist Free Churches. PAULR |
