Wakes /Fair Week

Now HERE is where the musings about Wakes week go.

My memories date back to when I used to help my Dad who owned the Shamrock Cafe on the Godfery Street Corner of Market Square. Wakes week was a very hectic time, especially on Friday and Saturday Market Days, when the Market was shifted to Godfery Street.

Too many Chip Cobs were served. I still remember the day we ran out of potatoes!.

Can anyone remember an elderly lady who had a ride at the fair which she operated manually by walking round pushing it? it was a ride for small children and you sat on peacocks, I seem to recall. This was in the 1950's and I used to think of her as "The peacock lady". The ride used to be situated on the Godfrey Street side of the fairground.

Glad that you remember her too Anne Marie.

I also remember some side shows, these were situated at the Wilmot Street side of the markept place. A flea circus comes to mind - these days you can only speculate as to whether it would be regarded as animal cruelty.

Also I recall a freak show with a bearded lady and various grotesque exhibits which were pickled in large jars. I have been trying to remember what some of these were, but all I remember was that they really gave me the creeps and I was glad to get out of the tent as quickly as possible.
