Pit lagoons accident
posted on: 1/7/2007 12:15:57 AM

A query from the main website:

"I am wondering if anyone knows anything about the young boy that fell into the Langley Pit lagoons. The year was about 1960-1964, he was approx 10 to 15 years old. He died as a result.

My dad has told me about it, and wonders if anyone else knows anything about this."

This rings a bell, and I am not sure that it isn't already mentioned somewhere on Chatarea. Can anyone help?

Recall a little about this
The child was eventually found in Bailey Brook after it had been drained the Dam being made against the Horse and Jockey. The Story suggested he was Trespassing on the Railway and had run off after being Challanged.A conveyor from New Langley Colliery ran from the mine and bridged the brook carrying fine silt.It seems he jumped
from this into the Brook and was sucked into the silt unable to free himself.10 yards away was a bridge over the brook if only?
Cannot recall the name of the child but know he lived on Lime Avenue on the Milnhay Estate Seem to think it was 1959

I remember the incident. We moved to Milnhay Road about 1960 when I was 3 years old, it must have been at least a couple of years after that for me to remember it.
My father helped with the search.
I think the boys surname was Kelly, I'm not certain of his christian name

Wonder if his name was Michael??

I seem to remember a boy called Michael being found there about 1959/60 -there was a large organised search for him -pupils of HGS were invited to help with the search.

I remember this little boy -dark haired, wore glasses and lived somewhere on Milnhay. He was quite a gentle little character -always making dens on /near the railway line.

He would have been about 9 or 10 years of age

Bless him
