I have been asked where somebody can look at any surviving records from the Coppice Colliery. I assume that they didn't go to the County Record Office, as they will all have been amalgamated into the NCB records. Anyone know?

(I know the answer will be easily found on the internet, but by asking here everyone gets to share the answer!)

The majority of Colliery records are now kept at The National Archives in Kew. Type 'Shipley Coppice Colliery' in the search box and a description of the records held and their reference number will be shown, also the location of records not kept there e.g. Derbyshire records office.

Photographs and abandonment plans can be seen at the Heritage Centre at British Coal Mining Records Office at Mansfield. The staff are very helpful here, and a telephone call in advance to 01623 637233 (essential to book a film viewer) with details of your requirements will ensure everything will be ready for you on your arrival. Copies are available, but rather expensive.

Sorry, missed the most important bit. Age-related stress.

The National Archives website is www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Thanks for that, Loomis. I notice that most of the Shipley Colliery Records seem to be at Matlock, rather than Kew.

Dead right Robert,

Some records have been re-categorised since I last researched them. Coppice and Woodside now generally appear under the single 'Shipley Collieries' title.

Better results are obtained if you search for 'Miller Mundy', 'Shipley Collieries', 'Shipley Collieries Ltd.,' or 'Shipley Colliery co. Ltd.'

Most of the mining photo's originally housed at Eastwood Hall were subsequently re-housed at Kew. The photo's are now kept at Mansfield, but many appear to have disappeared into the ether, i.e. 'lost in transit'.
