Smith family of Heanor

Hi, I'm trying to trace the history of Mary Ann Smith who MIGHT be my GGG Grandmother. I found an online listing for St Lawrence Church that had a baptism 28 March 1813 - mother Sarah, father illegitimate. A Mary/Mary Ann of the correct age and place of birth went on to marry Joseph Bentley. All census from 1841 show them living at Yardley, Worcestershire/Warwickshire. I have not been able to locate: birth of Mary/Mary Ann, marriage of Mary and Joseph (stop laughing), birth of their 3 older children. I have purchased a birth cert for their dau Sophia showing Mary Bentley formerly Smith. This is the only record that indicates her maiden name. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I will be eternally grateful. Also if anyone can provide info on Mary's mother Sarah. Hope to hear from someone soon! Thanks.

Hi Sandra,

Have you checked on the IGI? There is a Mary Ann Smith that married a Joseph Bentley on 18th Aug 1836 at Edgbaston, Warwick. That could be a good possible match.

Also, have you checked a later census? The 1851 one should give you her proper age and where she was born. Was she definately born in Heanor?

And as for Sarah, i have found two matches. There is one baptised at Heanor on 28 Aug 1791, parents are Wm and Hannah Smith. But then theres another Sarah Smith baptised on 16 Dec 1792 parents are William and Mary Smith. These are aslo on the IGI.

Hope that helps you some.
Ally.

Hi Ally,

Thank-you so much for that. I had tried everything I could think of even the IGI but somehow missed it! I hadn't thought they had married that early as the first child I found was born c1841. Maybe they lost one or two before the first census? Do you have any idea how I can find the correct Sarah?

Hope to hear from you again,
Best wishes,
Sandra
