replied on: 2/19/2007 7:00:14 PM I'm not 100% sure where Langley becomes Langley Mill. As you come down Milnhay Road, it is around the position of the railway bridge (this area was known as The Rookery). I would guess that as you come down Aldred's Lane, it would also be the railway (or perhaps Bailey Brook). But whatever, I don't believe that Langley Mill Boys' School would ever have been classed as part of Langley - Heanor maybe, but not Langley! |

replied on: 2/24/2007 3:18:36 PM i passed some information onto picturethepast to see if they could help out in this matter..but unfortunately i cannot distribute this email reply they sent...but i can say that there is no photgraphic or written evidence of any kind about clock in the langley area. |

replied on: 2/24/2007 6:23:10 PM Sadly that volume that refers to the clock begins 1890 and the nearest the have library prior is is 1888. There is no mention of the appeal in the library volume, so it must have been started in the interveening years. |

replied on: 2/24/2007 9:30:49 PM Not relating to the clock but I have found a mention in the 1887 volume to the School in Langley bing the infants and having Miss Browne as the headmistress. Isn't the infants school opposite the new buildings on Laceyfield, as RMMee said origionaly opposite the colliery ? Incidentally the Schools inspector was very impressed "The Infants hare been very carefully taught, answered brightly, and said their repetition exceedingly well." |

replied on: 2/26/2007 3:32:49 PM One point always considered where Langley changed to Langley Mill was the Railway bridge between Lea Lane and Milnhay Road last call for the Postie was Keswicks farm. I suppose the other point can only be Aldreds Lane the Langley Mill postie only delivered up Aldreds lane as far as Bailey Brook.This was in the 1940s |

replied on: 2/27/2007 6:19:24 PM I drove past the school on Laceyfields Road today, and there was no sign of a clock or anywhere where a clock had been. Oh well, worth a try! PS - Agree totally with Peter's border between Langley Mill and Langley! |

replied on: 2/27/2007 10:23:32 PM not that i know of tempus..but you have to be looking at the claramount part of it also and not just the laceyfeilds school..co's remembering what peter said also..where langley ends..the claramount school was always classed has a langley school..but the post office on the corner of claramount was always classed as marlpool...and that leads me to believe that langley began after the post office and the begining of the school...i wondered if they had one of those stone things they used to put up in the middle of the roads like a memorial and there was a clock on it..it must have been somewhere prominent to be noticed don't you think. |

The School it refers to is definatly Claramount, there is a photo in one of the later magazine for the "Langley School" (think about 1904) Couldn't see a clock, but the image was very low quality. However, I think by then the clock may not have even been there, there is referance in one of the 1902 magazines (sorry, not got the exact extract to hand) to them celebrating the building of some new school rooms. If the clock kept breaking down / was cheaply made, maybe they didn't think it worth keeping if it was in the way of the new build. |
