This would give them the power to delete posts, move threads, and, in the extreme, to ban users from the site. It needs to be someone who is a regular user of the site. Please get in touch if you are prepared to take on this hardly onerous task. |

replied on: 2/16/2007 11:02:24 AM Robert, I'd be happy to help out too. Perhaps you could have moderators for different sections of the site if you have enough offers of help? Mandy |

replied on: 2/17/2007 7:47:48 AM Yes, I quite like that idea too, though I don't know what implications there are. Being a moderator isn't hard - it just gives you different options. You can edit other people's messages (it always shows that you have done so). You can delete people's messages. You can move threads (but not individual messages) from one topic to another. (And this is where I am not certain how it will work - if you are a moderator in one section, can you move a message from that section to another?) You can lock threads, so that nothing more can be added. There are a few other bits and pieces that can be done, but the above are really quite simple. And any mistakes can always be put right (for example - if a message is deleted, it isn't really deleted, it is just hidden from everybody - it can be undeleted at a later date.) The sole job of the moderator is to try to keep people on track (at which I often fail!), and to prevent and remove any postings which are, for any reason, inappropriate for the site. Over this next week, I shall add a second moderator to each of the topics. If those who have volunteered would like to drop me an email if you have any particular preferences. |

replied on: 2/17/2007 12:43:10 PM Robert, How about giving the moderators access to moderate all items, but agree between ourselves which sections we will "manage"?? This way, if one is unavailable for a week or so, we can pass it over temporarily? I don't mind which sections I do, but usually end up on the Family History/Codnor and Loscoe threads particularly. If there's a "signal" there are new threads, I always read them, so I'm happy to do any section. |
