replied on: 4/17/2007 11:43:03 AM The edited version is better. The pictures in you head are always better than in words. And there were certainly non of the activities referred to in the second set of "speech marks" in the post following the edited post. Who would dare in case her dad walked in! |

replied on: 4/17/2007 1:32:15 PM Are ou referring to my post, Volsman? If so we are talking about different things!! Grandparents left from the parlour to go to their funeral, and a big issue was made of telling the neighbours at what time the coffin lid would be screwed down, so they could come and pay their respects and have their last sight of the deceased person. Quite a frightening event for a child to witness. In later years I was allowed to take a boyfriend into the parlour, but the door was to be left open and Mum kept popping in and out offering cups of tea, sandwiches, cake etc! |

replied on: 4/19/2007 7:54:43 AM Can you remember when women weren't allowed to go into some of the pubs in Heamor? In others they couldn't go into the "tap room" and had to sit in the "snug" or lounge. |

When I see chucking out time on the country's town centres, and see some young women falling out of the pub, out of their low tops and into the gutters, I wonder if we have made progress or reverted to the "gin mothers" of the 19 century. Bring back "Men only Taprooms!" Or am I just a Grumpy Old Man. V |
