replied on: 4/4/2007 3:00:37 PM Langley Mill Infants 1978-81 No uniform Mundy School 1981-84 No uniform...I hated it. I longed for the day when I could wear a uniform and not be picked on for wearing unfashionable clothes! Heanor Gate Smart....for a day! The most boring school colours ever. Even I (and I was a bit of a swot) broke the rules and wore addidas trainers and jumpers with logos!!! |

replied on: 4/4/2007 4:15:57 PM no uniform as such here sue...claramount was anything goes really and aldercar was a school tie and black blazer which lost it's was after two years thankfully..wore a white tie once at aldercar and got sent home LOL...bit of a rebel in ma time... |

HGS Boys Black Blazer with amber braid (no braid from 1950's Grey trousers Black shoes Black V necked jumpers (I think) White shirt Black/amber striped tie Black cap with amber braid (not compulsory by late 1950's)-prefects had an amber tassel on their cap. Black /amber hoizontal striped scarf -6th form were allowed Vertical stripes (more like a college scarf) Girls Navy Gymslip (replaced by navy pinafore slip in 1950's) A felt "house" badge was sewn on to your gymslip From 4th year navy skirts could be worn . 6th form could wear grey/navy/black skirts Black/ amber woven girdle /belt -supposed to be worn tied down the side -we used to wear the ties down the back -and tie pupils together during assembly! White Shirt Black/amber striped tie Black blazer with amber braid ( girls still has braided blazers when boys had plain black) Black V necked jumper/cardigan Navy gaberdine raincoat (hideous things!) Black shoes Scarf as for boys Black beret with school badge -6th formers wore a tassel on theirs)- not compulsory by late 1950's -poor little first formers were always having their caps/berets taken and thrown out of the bus window on the journey home! Must not forget the compulsory fleecy lined navy bloomers!!!! Girls Summer Uniform Yellow or Pale green short sleeved dresses with white peter Pan collar, gathered skirt (until mid.late 1950's) Mid -late 1950's "bobble" gingham dresses in yellow , blue or green -short sleeve shirt style top, A line skirt . After a couple of years red was introduced as an extra colour. About 1961 new style dresses -they were hideous - blue/white or green/white shirt waister style with 3/4 sleeves and large gathered skirt. White shoes could be worn in the Summer term - along with white ankle socks Of course, we customised the dresses -4inch wide white belts, net petticoats -and got into trouble - even shoes had to be "regulation" -I recall being kept in at lunch times, as I had a little gold chain on my shoes -most unacceptable -the senior mistress even obtained some black paint and made me paint the offending chains! I loved my uniform -half the fun was rebelling and making it your own style! |

replied on: 4/5/2007 8:23:55 PM Langley Mill Boys I don't remember a full uniform, but from 1951-1955 we had a Blazer with the School badge,the same colours as the Girls School. Navy with light blue braiding,also a navy tie with diagonal light blue stripes. PAULR. |

replied on: 4/5/2007 10:46:51 PM Reading Suzard's comments re the HGS girl's uniform brought back memories. The blue/white, green/white candystriped summer dresses in the 1960's seemed to have too much material in the skirts and I can remember walking across the yard to the science block having to hold down the skirt as the wind used to get underneath these full skirts and blow them up over your head. It was an awful garment and I cannot believe that someone had designed it. In fact we all could not understand why the previous summer uniform had been superceded as it seemed much nicer. Likewise I was also annoyed that the navy gymslip had been changed when I arrived at the school to be replaced by a horrid grey pleated skirt, white blouse, black V neck jumper and school tie. I liked the tie and the blazer though. We had to wear thick grey knickers for gym too with a white aertex blouse. The knickers were horrible scratchy things and all the school could look over the balcony and view you doing gymnastics. Very embarrassing. Hated the green mac. My mum bought me a long one thinking I would grow into it and it would last me through the school. Unfortunately at that point I stopped growing and spent miserable years going back and forth to school in a mid-calf length mac. This was the 60's and mini skirts were all the rage. By the 6th form in about 1967, the 6th formers managed to persuade Mr Stone, the head to agree to let them dispense with the uniform. But this was only a privelege for the 6th formers. |

replied on: 4/24/2007 2:32:54 PM The grammar school had a different tie for the sixth form in the late 1960's. Instead of the amber striped one, it was polyester with stripes, with a rose and crown motif, similar to the school badge, on it. |
