Trusley
Trusley is a small but extremely attractive village, but difficult to find and difficult to park when you get there. It was mentioned in the domesday book as being a manor belonging to Henry de Ferrers and there has undoubtedly been a village here since those times.
Most of one side of the village is occupied by the little church, called All Saints, Trusley Old Hall and the Old Manor House. Both the 2 houses were built by the Coke family, who still live at the Old Hall. Part of the manor house was demolished and the rest was converted into 4, 3 storey maisonettes after the family had decided it was too large for their needs. A small portion of the Old Hall remains from Elizabethan times, most notably a massive chimney and a detached summer house with a pyramidal roof. These are probably the oldest structures in the village.

All Saints is a small brick church, dating from 1713. It is in the Queen Anne style, with a low west tower and a scrolled stone pediment over the west door. Its box pews, triple decker pulpit, communion rails and font are all original.

North Street in Cromford
North Street in Cromford was built in 1776 and still to this day consists of terraced 3 storey buildings which were used to house the mill workers. A school was built at its far end, as Arkwright had insisted that children who came to work in the mill could read and write. This was the first planned street in Derbyshire and set a high standard not previously seen before.

RIDDINGS

Coal and ironstone had been mined in the area in a small way for centuries before the opening up of the Cromford canal and it's Pinxton branch in 1793 made large scale mining and the establishment of an ironworks feasibly worthwhile. The original works belonged to 3 Derby ironsmiths trading as Thomas Salelbye & Co in the late 18th century but was bought out by James Oakes in 1818.

TUNSTEAD

A village in Derbyshire, situated in the Great Rocks Dale north of Buxton.

Not to be confused with Tunstaed Milton which is roughly five miles to the north east.

It is famous as the birthplace of James Brindley, pioneer builder of Britain's canals. he was born in 1716 in a farmhouse on the edge of the village and with the encouragement of his mother became an apprentice millwright in Leek. The Derbyshire Archaeological Society planted a sapling and have erected a monunent to his memory.

Talking about unusual Derbyshire names - have we have Kniveton yet? It is near Ashbourne. There is also Kirk Ireton.

Am I allowed to have two goes at once under these rules, I wonder? They both end in "n" so the game can continue as before.
