Bullock Flint Family of Heanor
posted on: 4/26/2007 8:49:06 PM

Hi All

Just discovered this great site. I am researching my descendency from the BULLOCK FLINT family of Heanor (aka BULLOCK FLINT, BULLOCK-FLINT, or Bullock FLINT - where Bullock is recorded as a second/third given name) and would appreciate any information that you Heanor Local/Family Historians out there could provide.

My maternal grandfather James BULLOCK-FLINT (1912, Maltby, Yorks) was the son of Joseph Bullock FLINT (1880, Heanor) and grandson of William Bullock BULLOCK/FLINT (1850, Heanor). I have traced the family from the origins of the name (read on for an explaination) to the early 1900's through the BMD Indexes, Census Records, Church Record Transcripts held by Derbyshire Ancestral Research Group (DARG), Marlpool Cemetery Records online, the NBI, and visits to Marlpool, but want to follow the trail through the 1900's to the present day and any possible living descendents also researching this family.

The BULLOCK FLINT's are all descended from either my Great Great G/Father William BULLOCK (b. Apr 1850, Heanor) or his brother Jacob BULLOCK (b. JFM 1852), the illegitimate sons of Martha BULLOCK (b. 1830, Heanor) who marries William FLINT (b. 1829, West Hallam) in July 1852, ie. shortly after the birth of Jacob. Therafter the two brothers are known by variations on the name BULLOCK FLINT, and it is possible that William FLINT is both William & Jacob's father (William, the first born being named after his father ?). William FLINT of West Hallam, a Blacksmith/Framesmith, also possibly has Heanor connections around 1850/51, being recorded in the 1851 Census as a lodger in a Long Row, Nottingham Public House along with three Lace/Shirt Makers all born in Heanor, though I am unable to prove a connection with Martha at the time of William BULLOCK's birth.

William & Martha FLINT have further children Harriet (1853/54), Sarah (1859), Joseph (1863), Arthur (1865-1869), Samuel (1867-1867), George (1870-1870) & Mary Ann (1872-1872). They reside at Tag Hill, then North Row & finally Nelson Street. Harriet marries Henry JACKSON in 1871, Sarah marries Samuel GILLOTT in 1880, and Joseph marries Eliza BAILEY in 1882.

William (aged 10) & Jacob (aged 8) are baptised at St Lawrence in 1860 with the given names William Bullock & Jacob Bullock, sons of Martha BULLOCK (Spinster), effectively naming them William Bullock BULLOCK & Jacob Bullock BULLOCK. By this time Martha is married to William FLINT, and in fact their daughter Harriet (aged 7) is baptised at the same time as William & Jacob, perhaps suggesting her intention to name the boys William Bullock FLINT & Jacob Bullock FLINT, the names they adopt in later life.

William marries Sarah Ann SAVAGE (b. 1853, Heanor) at Ilkeston Independant Chapel in 1872 under the name William FLINT, and names William FLINT, Framesmith as his father. Their children Sarah Ann, Mary, William, Jacob, Joseph, Martha, Walter, Lucy, Thomas, Ernest & Elsie all have Bullock as an additional given name as registered in BMD records and recorded in St Lawrence Baptism records. They appear in Census records under the name FLINT at Nelson Street. William Bullock FLINT dies 1897, age 46, and is buried at Marlpool (Gravestone still exists, though is laid face up on the ground). By 1901 wife Sarah has remarried and moved to Nottingham with the younger children. The older children stay in Nelson Street, where grandparents William & Martha also still live, with Sarah marrying John WOOLEY in 1896 & Mary marrying Albert PEEL in 1900. Martha marries Robert SOAR in 1903. Between 1901 and 1907, Jacob & Joseph (both Miners) who had been lodging with married sister Mary in 1901, move to South Yorkshire where Joseph marries Sarah Jane Harrison in 1907 (my Great Grandparents). Jacob marries Eliza Ellen WRIGHT in Nottingham RD in 1906, and at some point must return to Nottingham as I have located their son William Bullock FLINT, born in S.Yorks in 1907, in Nottingham RD Death Records for 1996. Both Jacob & Joseph's children's baptism's are recorded under the surname BULLOCK-FLINT, and whereas Joseph's offspring's births are also registered under that name (including my Grandfather), Jacob's children are registered as FLINT's with Bullock as a middle name. Apart from my own line, I have no idea what happened to the rest of this side of the family, other than the fact that mother Sarah was buried at Marlpool in 1919, with first husband William; Walter marries Amy SAVAGE, Worksop RD, 1912; and Ernest marries Frances COLLIS at Holywell Cross Church (Chesterfield RD) in 1920.

Meanwhile Jacob married Harriet BROWN at Loscoe Baptist Chapel also in 1872, under his birthname Jacob BULLOCK. Their children William, Thomas, Willie, Mary Ann, Joseph, Frank, George, Sarah Alice, Frank, Jacob & Clara Jane also all have Bullock as a given name with surname FLINT according to BMD Indexes, but are baptised as the children of Jacob & Harriet BULLOCK-FLINT. They also appear in Census records under the name FLINT at Nelson Street, and the family appear to have stayed in and around Heanor as I have located many of them in Marlpool Cemetery. Jacob & Harriet are buried at Marlpool with the headstone bearing the surname BULLOCK FLINT. Willie/William marries a Frances BOOTH who dies in childbirth in 1900; Joseph marries Sarah WATERALL in 1902; and George marries Elizabeth RIGLEY in 1907 and it is they and their offspring that I have found at Marlpool, also bearing the names BULLOCK FLINT on headstones.

And Finally, to complete this tale of illegitimacy and confusion over names, William & Jacob's mother Martha BULLOCK was the illeg daughter of Mary BULLOCK (1795, Heanor), and her birth (1830) is recorded at Heanor Independent Chapel, along with siblings Thomas (1827) & Richard (1833), naming their father as Richard BULLOCK. This could refer to Richard ALLEN, who Mary BULLOCK marries in 1842, & with whom the children are living in the 1841 & 1851 Census under the name ALLEN (with one year old William BULLOCK recorded as William ALLEN, Grandson, in 1851). Mary has three other elder illegitimate children, Sarah (1819), Phoebe (1821) & Joseph (1824), who are baptised at St Lawrence, father unnamed. The children name Richard ALLEN as their father when they marry.

Phoebe Bullock (1821) was my 3x Great grandmother-she married John Eyre -I have lots of information on their descendants if of interest? Phoebe pre-deceased John, and John ended his days living on Nelson St Heanor with his son.

Richard Bullock (father Richard Allen) married Jane Weston.

If you look at Subject "The Bullock family" in this section (on page 6 at the moment) there is some information which may be of interest to you.

Hi Suz

Thanks for that. Any info on the Eyres would be most welcome. I have traced each of the six illegit Bullock children thro the census records but as yet have not done same with any of their descendents other than for Richard & jane's family.

So it seems we share the same 4x Great Grandmother in Mary Bullock then. Question is though, was Richard Allen the father of any of Mary's six illegit children, all born well before I have proof of Mary & Richard Allen's connection, ie the 1841 Census.

As I mentioned, the three youngest's births are recorded at Heanor Independent Chapel (Source: IGI) naming a Richard Bullock as father (poss Richard Allen) but I do not know when the births were registered there. I need to revisit the DARG archives again but not been since this time last year I'm afraid.

I had seen the thread on the Bullock Family, and the one on "Which Sarah Bullock" (m. Gillott) and can add info to them both - I need to dig out my notes from working thro the DARG records to confirm what I have and will then add to those threads. I have collated all occurences of Bullock's in the records and have pieced together what I believe to be Mary's ancestry - daugh of Francis Bullock & Mary Buckland, g'daugh of Francis Bullock & Mary Hand.

Elaine

Sorry for slow reply - was expecting to get an e-mail when there were any replies to my original posting but didn't happen, and only just checked site for new postings.

I have your Mary as a poss daugh of Francis & Mary Bullock but as yet have not been able to prove it through Parish Records. Other than that I unfortunately have nothing to add.

What info I do have on the descendents of Francis & Mary, I have tonight posted on the new(ish) Bullock Family thread, so check it out there.
