replied on: 5/17/2007 8:06:37 AM Mr Beryman then applied for temporary transfer of the licence to the man Priestley, which application, however, was held over until yesterday (Thursday). Mrs Simms (late landlady) protested on the ground that her husband knew nothing of the new arrangement and pointed out that the reason of the house being closed was because there was no drink for sale. She sold the last pint prior to closing last Saturday. She wired to the brewers to send more drink but they had not done so yet. In 1904 July, an application was made for Mr Priestley In 1906 June, The temporary transfer of the license of the Eclipse Inn, Loscoe from the representatives of Henry Priestley (deceased) to Selina Priestley (widow) was granted. Mr and Mrs Priestley living in Loscoe before taking over the Eclipse, in 1881 on the census Henry Priestley age 28 occupation a coal miner was born at Heanor his wife Selina Priestley aged 24 born at Denby, with siblings Thomas G. Priestley a son aged 8 years a scholar born at Loscoe, Isaac Priestley aged 6 years a scholar born at Loscoe, William a son aged 4 years born at Loscoe, and Herbert a son aged 2 born at Loscoe. In 1907, May 10th 1907 The Eclipse Loscoe In applying for the confirmation of a full license for the Eclipse Inn, Loscoe, tenanted by Selina Priestley; Mr. Arthur Barlow, of Nottingham, said that the Eclipse was at the present time a “Beer On” about ninety yards away was the Golden Ball which had a full License, and the justices had suggested that the latter should by referred to the compensation Authority, but that the spirit License should be transferred to the Eclipse. Accordingly application was only being made for compensation in respect of the surrender of the beer license, Police Sergeant Stone having given evidence, the bench decided to confirm the License. In 1913 July, Final Transfer The licence of the Eclipse Inn Loscoe was finally transferred from the administrator of the estate of Selina Priestley (deceased) to Wm Lilly of Loscoe Grange WILLIAM LILLEY LICENCE HOLDER Jenny |

Mary E Wolley aged 27 , Wife, no occupation , b Codnon. Ann Lilley aged 75, Head, Widow b Bockabough Richard Priestley aged 41, Head, coal miner b Nottingham,Barton Mary Priestley, aged 41 , wife, b Gotham William son unmarried 18 b loscoe John son unmarried 16 b loscoe Arthur son 14 b loscoe George son 12 b loscoe lucy daug 10 b loscoe Sarah Daug 7 b loscoe seems that we had Priestleys living at the Eclipse before Henry and Selena...mmmmmmm got to look into this a bit deeper me thinks !! wonder if Richard Priestley was Henry Priestley? i can understand why they would have moved from Barton to Loscoe....most of the people around Barton and Gotham worked at the Gypsum mines..so mining would be the link. |

Notts Barton We shouldn't post full census details on here due to copyright- but i can put my "version" of the census if you require it. By the way -Robert has wife mary and same children as Richard of 1881??? Now there's a puzzle! |

replied on: 5/21/2007 3:10:20 PM here's a further puzzle Richard Priestly 1871 he lived in Loscoe with wife Mary-and 7 children (2 youngest twin girls. I don't think Richard is old enough to be Henry's father here's where it gets interesting 1861 living in Loscoe Richard Priestly unmarried 22 Coal Miner b. Barton and Isaac Priestly unmarried 19 colliery labourer b. Barton they are both lodgers with John Wright 26 carpenter b. Dale Abbey, his wife Sarah 29 b. Barton Notts- children HENRY age 8 b Heanor, Eliza M 3 b. Loscoe, Joseph J 5mth b. Loscoe Now is it possible that Sarah Wright is sister (or sister in law) of Richard and Isaac Priestly?? and the child named as Henry Wright age 8 b. Heanor , was in fact Henry Priestly-and was either born illegit to sarah or the child of Sarah's marriage to Henry priestly. I haven't found any marriages yet, but there is a 5 year age gap in the children of John/sarah Wright, so it's possible Sarah was married previously??? Or henry is not of the marriage??? 1861 next door to them lived Josiah Wright 60 Shoemaker b Loscoe wife Mary and children So possibly Henry Priestly was named as Henry Wright on census, but he was the nephew of Richard and Isaac Priestly??? Oh what a tangled web I weave!!!!! I'll weave some more!!! |

replied on: 5/21/2007 3:37:24 PM There is this marriage FreeBMD Nottingham Jun qtr 1857 on same page Sarah Priestly John Wright 7b 261 if this is their marriage -then Henry would be b. before marriage it's possibly worth sending for this marriage cert or the birth cert of aone of the younger Wright children -that will tell you if Sarah had been married before. 1871 Henry is on census listed as Wright with parents John /Sarah and siblings John and Sarah are to be found in Heanor (ray St, Wellington St 1881/91/1901 |

replied on: 5/21/2007 3:54:32 PM he he 1861..richard living at loscoe..he is married..his wife, Mary is living in Gotham at her parents house with her child Mary A aged 1...maiden name SHEPHERD..she is on the 1861 census as Mary Priestley, miners wife.. I think richard and Isaac where brothers and they were staying with their sister sarah..she shows on the census as being born in Barton 1841 census for Barton shows 3 families of Priestley living nigh on next door to each other...i think richards father was William Priestley born 1796 in barton...on the 1841 census..William Priestley married to Mary, daughter SARAH b 1830 ( this is the one they are lodging with after she marries and moves to Loscoe) John son b1835, and richard b1839 STILL CANT FIND A HENRY tho... the plot thickens |

replied on: 5/21/2007 4:52:25 PM how about this for a possiblity? Henry Priestley is the son of Sarah Priestly ( sarah is sister of Richard and Isaac (other siblings of Sarah are possibly William, John (married Charlotte and lived loscoe), Rebecca,Ann). Sarah had son Henry -possibly his father's name was henry -but doesn't look like sarah married henry's father. Sarah then married John Wright and had more children. Henry was names as henry Wright on 1861/71 census -but couldn't have been registered as Wright, as Mum didn't marry John Wright until a few years after Henry's birth????? |

replied on: 5/21/2007 11:50:48 PM 1851 john Wright was living at Dale Abbey on a farm -head of household was Joseph Wright 24 farmer - living with him were his brothers and sisters : Hannah 26, William 18, JOHN 15 Henry 14 and visiting was William Wright 48 b Ilkeston. If the marriage is correct -John Wright and Sarah Priestly didn't marry until 1857 -so Henry is probably reg in the name of Henry Priestly 1871 they are living next door but 3 to the Eclipse Inn- it's the only census where henry is b. greenhills lane, but it's not far from Heanor! Can't find a birth reg though?? Wonder if we can find a connection between the Wrights in Barton and the Wrights in Dale Abbey??? |

replied on: 6/14/2007 2:02:28 PM could this be the same family that you are looking for? 15th Feb, 1918 Ripley & Heanor News Fatal fall in the Street At Loscoe Coroner’s Inquiry The second inquest at Loscoe on Monday was on the body of Mary Priestley, widow, aged 77 years, of Loscoe, who fell down in the street on Saturday morning last, and died the same day. Annie Priestley, wife of John Priestley, Loscoe Road, Heanor, identified the body as that of her mother-in-law, widow of the late Richard Priestley. Deceased was pretty active for her age, and never complained of being unwell. Eliza Mills, residing on the Heanor Road, Loscoe, said she lived near to the deceased, and kept a grocer’s shop, and on Saturday morning about 11.30 she looked out and saw deceased lying on the footpath near her own doorstep. “Witness picked her up and asked what she had done, but she could only answer “Oh, dear.” Some groceries were on the road, which was rather stony where deceased fell. Dr. Thomson (Codnor) said he was passing through the village about 1.45 p.m. when they stopped him. Deceased was dead. A little blood was oozing from the mouth and there was a bruise on the base of the skull. Witness had attended deceased for bronchitis some months ago. She must have fallen on something sharp. A verdict of “Accidental death” was returned. Jenny |
