replied on: 5/19/2007 10:06:29 AM Thanks everyone for your replies all have been most useful. All I know is that the Charlton family lived here for a few years and then went back I think to live near Shirland/Alfreton. If the men were Mill workers, would this have been flour mill or clothing? I am not sure of the history of employment around Langley Mill/ Aldercar. We travelled by car down Aldercar lane and found it quite rural. Can we assume there were working class houses built here for the mill workers as we only found a farm and a few other larger dwellings. D |

replied on: 5/19/2007 1:04:38 PM Aldercar lane (which you drove down) was home to Aldercar Hall -if you go to the Langley Mill and Aldercar forum you may be interested to read the "Aldercar Toll Gate" and "Aldercar Hall" topics. However,I doubt your relatives would have lived there. Part of what we now know as Cromford Road, or possibly part of Dunstead Rd (Robert will correct me as to which part was known as Aldercar lane) was at that time also called Aldercar lane -some of my ancestors lived there too-in terraced cottages. I would think your ancestors worked at the flour mill -on which there is a topic on the langley mill and Aldercar forum. The Smith family, before acquiring the flour mill were cola mine owners in Langley mill/Aldercar. Hope this helps |

replied on: 5/19/2007 7:11:13 PM Suz - I never have to correct you!!! In 1871, "Aldercar Lane" was definitely what we now know as Cromford Road, all the way from the Mill to Aldercar Church. I'm not sure when what we now know as Aldercar Lane got that name. |
