| WesleyLees Quote | Reply | | Man in Space Pub" posted on: 8/7/2007 2:14:09 PM In the film "Carry on at your Convenience", there is a works outing from "Boggs" sanitary ware works to Brighton. On the way, certain amounts of ale are taken and to illlustrate this, a montage of pub signs are shown, ostensibly of the pubs visited. One of these is the Red Lion in Iver, Bucks, near to Pinewood Studios where the films were made, not far from where I now live. Another one was the "Man in Space" pub at Hill Top, with "Kimberley Ale" shown on the sigh. The sign shown was the original one with an austronaut floating in space with a coiled umbilical cord, which has I think now changed. How this came to be on the road from London to Brighton escapes me. I think the Carry on Films were made to a low budget, so any bit of old stock footage was pressed into service. And so Eastwood passed into the annuls of Film History. I think the pub was so named as it was reopened shortly after one of the first USSR space walks. |

Man in Space Pub
replied on: 8/8/2007 11:53:50 PM I can remember the pub being opened in the 1960's to quite a bit of excitement due to it's unusual name. Can anyone remember what was on the site before the pub was built? I have seen "Carry on At Your Convenience" many times, but have never noticed the "Man in Space" pub sign. Well spotted Wesley. I will watch the film more carefully next time. |

Man in Space Pub
replied on: 8/9/2007 10:52:23 AM There was originally a pub on the site of the Man in Space - it was in a row of buildings (possibly cottages) and the pavement was wider than usual pavements - the row of buildings/cottages was interupted by Castle St. My husband's grandfather knew the landlord there - 1940's-50's - but the name of the pub escapes him at the moment. It could have been the Coach and Horses. From "Around Old Eastwood" "It was at Hill Top that the second of Eastwood's Toll Bars was sited, the other being on Derby Rd. A chain was slung across the road. The tolls were imposed to pay for the maintenance of the highways, and it was a punishable offence to attempt to avoid payment. Inkerman Street and Alma Street, both names associated with the Crimean War have now been renamed Castle St and Cross St. The Coach and Horses, one of three public houses once situated at Hill Top was originally a Coaching Inn with stabling at the rear. In the days when betting was illegal, the police would keep watch for evidence of betting taking place from vantage points such as Hewson's shop and the Cooperative store. The houses on the right have been replaced by Phoenix Court." The description of the position of the Coach and Horses (from this article) certainly sounds like it was on the site of the Man in Space, but as yet the name doesn't ring any bells!- possibly because we can only think of 2 pubs at Hill Top -The Castle and The Man in Space (possibly Coach and Horses) - further investigation is needed! At least we know there was a pub on the site before the "Space" was built. |

Man in Space Pub
replied on: 8/9/2007 4:45:14 PM Thanks for that Suzard, really informative. I used to go to the Church a couple of doors away from the Man in Space and can vaguely remember a pub almost as one of the terraced houses, an old "local". Did the name change co-incide with the rebuilding or did it predate it? Looking at the map, the road opposite is Raglan Street, also from the Crimean war, he of the raglan sleeves fame. Iceboy, 'fraid Windsor Safari Park is no more - it has been transformed into "Legoland". The animals were just let loose into Windsor Park, where they exist on the occasional ramble or jogger. GRS, I hope you didn't miss the MIS sign because you were on the back row of the Empire otherwise engaged!! |

replied on: 8/10/2007 1:01:18 AM Well done Stan - my husband remembered the General Havelock later today, but then dismissed it . It will set his mind at rest to know the name of the "third" pub. Wesley, the name change came with the rebuilding of the pub. |

replied on: 8/12/2007 11:39:44 AM I have two old photos -- both the same -- showing a row of cottages at hilltop ,with a public house on . One photo names the pub as the Haverlock -- the other names the pub as the New Inn --- both were taken in the early 1930's . |

replied on: 8/12/2007 8:51:02 PM I agree with that , Stanley. In Morrisons at Eastwood there is an old photograph of the row of cottages (fronted by a wide pavement) and there is the pub - the pub sign can be seen but not read by our aging eyes! |
