St Andrew's Carpenter shop
posted on: 9/22/2007 9:10:25 AM

In working on St. Lawrence's archives I've found a throw-away paragraph in one of the books that refers to St Andrews (Langley Mill) origins.

Before the present church, and before it's predecessor the Iron mission church were built apparently the church was originally started as a Sunday school which rapidly grew and eventually became a church as well as Sunday school.

The reference says that Sunday school took place in a carpenter shop but had to purchase the Iron mission building as it grew quickly and the shop was not big enough (an amusing part of it refers to Claud Corfield having to stand on the ladder between two floors to try and teach the children who were on both floors).

Does anyone know where the shop was?

I'll try to get a photo on later but due to the way it was printed its a bit difficult to scan .

It was on Elnor Street, on the opposite side of the road to where the tin tab was placed, next to the school, between the junction with Station Road and the school's location.

Just after the war it was a sheet-metal workshop. In the late 50's the upstairs room was used as a gymnasium and was the Headquarters of the Heanor and District Health and Strength Physical Culture Club. Geo Hancock was the Club Manager.
