replied on: 5/17/2008 9:33:02 AM I was at Aldercar in 63, the only other class that I can recall was the R.E. class room. There were others though. I have some team photo's taken outside of those classrooms. You also forgot to mention the 'Tuck Shop' with all those healthy options like Wagon Wheels etc. |

replied on: 5/17/2008 2:23:56 PM I started Aldercar 1970. Coming down from the bus bay across playground down some steps - on the left pottery and art rooms - carrying on down and around to front entrance of the block I remember places to hang coats and long seating areas toilets, Mrs Walters sewing room next door to science lab. Across from this another science room and down from that the music room. Miss Dyson took my science class, then she married and can't recall her name after. I remember an experiment going wrong with a bunsen burner with my group and a load of flames shot towards the ceiling and we all shot to the floor! |

replied on: 5/17/2008 6:53:55 PM jenks...i remember the tuck shop LOL... i do recall the places to hang coats now you mention it sherry, but i could have sworn there was either a science class or biology class in there..i remember dissecting a frog in 65 in one of these classrooms i think..because the windows at the back of the class looked onto the council house garden next to the school. please do bring other schools into this conversation and rake up anything from the past you want about the school you went to... |

replied on: 5/17/2008 9:55:14 PM You are right Iceboy - sorry I may not have explained properly. There were two science rooms at the far end of the block - and one just as you described. The other was opposite on the other side of the corridor. |

replied on: 5/17/2008 10:09:10 PM Does anyone remember the school plays at Aldercar, on the stage in front of the main hall? I was not in one myself but they were of a very high standard. The one I recall most is Hans Christian Anderson. At the time Mr Cliffe was headmaster and Mr Wriggly deputy head. Mrs Sheldon was headmistress. What a character Mr Wriggly was - if I remember right he was in the RAF when younger and when he shouted the room shook! He had an amazing sense of humour though and made everything sound interesting. |

replied on: 5/18/2008 11:34:09 AM well it was the 60s when i was there..the plays always use to be at christmas time..i think each class had to come up with some sort of show piece for the daytime one and night..such a laugh though.going back to the building..going through the main entrance led you to some stairs, but below the stairs if i remember rightly was a library ? on the right and left led you to more science, cookery, needle class and toilets and cloakroom. |

replied on: 5/18/2008 2:39:12 PM Absolutely right Iceboy. That's just how I remember it. Those stairs your talking about - it brings to mind the school dinner menu - it was on a board on top of the stair way on your way down and I always had a look to see what was on. I loved the school dinners - had a full school dinner and then went home and had another, ate loads of chocolate in between and never put on an ounce of weight. Shame I can't say the same now and I don't eat half as much! |

replied on: 5/20/2008 12:24:28 PM You could be right on either one, Iceboy. I vaguely remember a room/rooms being tucked away under there. The teachers lounge was at the end of the corridor upstairs - facing you as you came to the top of those stairs. On the corridor itself - I think at the far end, was Mr Ijal's maths class (excuse spelling - sure that's wrong) He may have been there when you was. There were English classes along there too - Miss Spencer - can't remember what the others were though. Going past the top of the other stairs there were French - Miss Fletcher - Mr Williams (Ripper) - Music - Miss Weir - Tech drawing - Mr Grimes. Which teachers do you remember, Iceboy? Were you anyone's favourite or could you never do right for one? |

replied on: 5/21/2008 4:00:13 PM Sherry You're the first person who has mentioned Miss Fletcher, other than me. I remember her well, and also Mr Grout (English). Really not sure that this thread is in the right location. |

replied on: 5/21/2008 8:06:44 PM I imagine most of the 'boys' who met Miss Fletcher would remember her as she always looked glamourous and I recall her being rather flirty with the male teachers. I remember Mr Grout very well though he never taught me. I used to see him a lot around Eastwood, always with that pipe in his mouth. One of the old school, I think. I wonder what he would make of some of the kids today. This post does seem a bit de-ja-vue. Have I posted some of this before - or is it my age? |

replied on: 5/21/2008 9:29:03 PM Doesn't it seem that teachers had strange names all those years ago? During my time at Heanor G.S. there was Mr. Dickie, Miss Thicke, Mrs. Belcher, Miss Boreham who metamorphsised into Mrs. Pidd, Mr. Savage, Miss Loveley, Miss Longbottom etc. Any more anyone? |
