| Jennypeg Researcher Quote | Reply | | Heanor Church wall posted on: 11/28/2007 3:09:49 PM 12th Dec 1868 Ripley Advertiser Heanor Accident at Heanor Church This church recently rebuilt and only opened a few weeks ago, has been the scene of an accident. The chancel part of it stands on an eminence some eight or nine feet above a public footpath, on the church side of which there is now a nine-inch brick wall. On Sunday night, just after the congregation had separated, this wall gave way, and with it three feet of ground, as well as a few gravestones. The chancel window is now only a foot from the edge of the bank, and has a very precarious appearance, so much so that the people living in the houses opposite to it are afraid to go to bed at night for fear that part of the building should fall before morning. Happily no one was injured when the wall fell, but if it had fallen during the day it is more than likely that the result would have been very serious. Jenny |

replied on: 11/30/2007 9:00:37 AM I've seen a related article to this one in the Derby Mercury, will have to see if I can find it. It has a wonderful quote from Frederick Corfield saying that it proved how good the new foundations were that the church had survived the collapse of the wall. With retrospect we are able to look at it and say - hmmm South west corner, yep, that's exactly were the structural engineer said the worst subsidence was occuring and pulling the rest of the church down with it. "The inhabitants in the neighborhood of Heanor church were greatly alarmed on Sunday evening by the fall of the wall opposite the chancel window, a great quantity if earth having fallen with it, as well as sine gravestones. Their alarm was so great that they were afraid to retire for rest for the night, as they were all but certain that there would be another fall, and that it would be accompanied by part of the church, but their fears were fortunately groundless. To an onloooker the church appears to be in a dangerous position being little more than a yard from what is now the edge of the bank, but it is said to be built on a good and sure foundation." |
