replied on: 12/29/2007 8:59:42 PM Ice The Butchers shop on the corner of Peel Street was Don Lockwoods it was opposite my brothers house on Station Road I think Don moved to the Nottingham area when his shop was demolished along with Archie Foggs Garage.I don't remember any exact dates because I also moved away from Langley Mill in 1960.When I was at the Boys School 1948-1955, directly opposite was a piece of wasteland between the Chemist on the corner of Dunstead, and Pidds decorators, this is where Brians butchers shop was built. Both Don and Brian were good friends of my brother. paulR |

I have a photograph of it prior to demolition, but after it had ceased trading, and you can clearly see the name of the shop over the door. The name is faint, so it is possible that it was an older name which had been covered up. But was there not another butchers shop, closer to the junction with Lower Dunstead. One of the posts talks of it being next to the newsagents, in which case it was not the shop at the bottom of Peel Street. Robert |

replied on: 12/30/2007 11:27:57 AM Robert Good photo, definitely the shop in question I remember it very well, it was Lockwoods butchers in the 50s/60s, the hoardings that can be seen was on the side of Drapers shop next to the opening to Fogg's Garage,and the Pillar box is still there. PaulR |

replied on: 1/1/2008 4:26:27 PM From Kelly's 1941, Lockwood, Frank and Son, butchers, 16a Station Road. No mention of anyone named Hartley as a shopkeeper in the list of traders for Langley Mill. I suspect that the list would not be a complete listing for the area and may have had a vanity element in the compilation of lists. That is buy the directory or similar and you will be listed. The Jones Newsagent connection for me is that Robert Jones and myself were in the same class at Aldercar SM. Robert had a double barreled surname which he did not use a lot. I have probably mangled the previous sentence but I think it makes sense. regards Phil |

replied on: 1/1/2008 9:30:02 PM Happy New Year to everyone Ice Now you've come to mention it, the shop that was built on the land between Smithsons Chemist (now Motapoint) and Pidds Decorators (now Classic Design) was originally a cobblers (no idea who owned it) before Brian Thomas took it over as a butchers. replied on: 3/18/2008 12:04:32 AM Ice I've been talking to my sister-in-law today,they owned the Living Fire Centre after Pidd's Decorators retired and she was saying that one of my nephews was a friend of the cobblers son that had the shop between theirs and Smithsons Chemist (now Motapoint) built,his name was Revill he was badly handicapped,I seem to remember he once had a shop near Edgar Parkers and Walter Maine (Wally) who opened a shop in North Street used to work with him. After Revill finished Brian Thomas took the shop over as a Butchers. paulr |
