THE ILKESTON PIONEER 12TH MARCH 1863 LOSCOE ROYAL MARRIAGE – In Tuesday, a good dinner was provided for the poorest of the old men of this village, has also a good tea for the female portion of that class, and the whole of the children without exception, by the gentlemen of the district. The children and teachers, numbering 400 met at the Baptist Chapel at twelve o’clock, and started in procession at one to met the Codnor School, accompanied by a large number of the members from the sick Clubs, held at the Golden Ball Inn and the Eclipse. A large number of flags were seen waving amongst the crowd, many of them being bought for the occasion. A very appropriate and interesting speech was made by H. Frearson, Esq., to those assembled, which met with loud applause. Vehicles were kindly provided to convey the smallest of the children in the procession. A more interesting sight will, we think, never again be witnessed, and we are happy to say that everything passed off in the most pleasing and peaceable manner possible. RIPLEY ADVERTISER AUGUST 20TH 1870 LOSCOE LODGE ANNIVERSARY The members of the poor man’s friend lodge, held at Mr Sedgwick’s the Eclipse Inn, Loscoe, celebrated their Anniversary on Monday last, when the members attended divine service in the club-room, which has of late been set apart entirely for that purpose. Mr Sedgwick having built a large wooden hall for lodge purposes. The sermon was preached by the Rev. J. Mansell curate, whose discourse was listened to with marked attention. The Rev gentleman took his text from Psalm ciii 1 – “Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity” The sermon was marked throughout by his usual eloquence and clearness ever keeping prominently before their view the main part of his subject unity he very powerfully urged the necessity of unity in all thing, not only temporal but also spiritual, if we wished to attain our object and that ought to be the glory of God and the good of our fellow creatures. After the service, the members, headed by the Heanor Brass Band, paraded through the principal through fares, and afterwards partook of an excellent dinner, provided by the host and hostess. Jenny |
