Photos too dark to post Diappearance of Brook Farm The destruction of Brook Farm, Loscoe, the picturesque 17th century farmstead home of Mr and Mrs R. Holmes, by demolition during the past week, removes a landmarkfamiliar to people over a wide area. Today all that stands of the building is the old stone chimney, and this, too, may have disappeared before these lines go into print. The original farm was built as far back as 1616 and dates on the building show that extensions were made in 1679, 1704 and again in 1774.The fine oak beams and general construction of the farm point to the fact that it was once an important property. It is believed to have belonged to the manners family and later to the Hunters of Kilburn Hall. For the past 80 or 90 years it has been in the occupation of the Holmes family, and the above picture showing Mr R.Holmes and two grandchildren, shows what an attractive farmhouse it must have been in the old days.Since 1910, when subsidence first began to play havoc with the structure the building has had to be strengthened by wooden supports, and two years ago Mr and Mrs Holmes had to move to accommodation nearby. The disappearance of the farmhouse has been a great blow to Mr Holmeswho, with the rest of the family, was born and bred at the farm, and had many happy memories of the old home. |
