A query from Oregon, USA - any answers or comments will be gratefully received and passed on. The correspondent is hoping to be over here in a few weeks.

"Today I received copies of letters written to my grandmother, Nellie Elida HUNT Collings (1883-1961)in Idaho from her second cousin, Ellen "Nellie" MOON Shaw (1880-1954).

These letters were written in the late 1940's and early 1950's from Challen House, 76 Fletcher Street, Heanor, Derbyshire.

I would like to get in touch with any descendants of hers and her husband, Enoch SHAW. They had a daughter Dorothy Edna SHAW born maybe in 1910, who married a man called Rowland (surname not known).

Let me know if you know of anyone who can help me locate members of that family.

Also some of my family originated in Heanor. Thomas Browne was christened 11 Oct 1668 in Heanor. His parents both died there: Henry BROWNE d.7 May 1702 and Joane CHEETAM Browne d.25 Jan 1706."

3rd June 1960 Ripley & Heanor News
DEATH OF VETERAN HEANOR MUSICIAN
Mr Enoch Shaw
An old and respected resident of Heanor passed away on Thursday, in the person of Mr Enoch Shaw, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs D. E. Bamber. He was in his 88th year.
In former years Mr Shaw was a well-known figure in local musical circles, and his outstanding ability as a violinist endeared him to audiences for many miles around His efforts in connection with the concerts given by the former Heanor Choral Union were continued for many years, and the success of the concerts was in no small measure due to his meticulous execution of the exacting orchestral parts involved.
As a theatre player he led the orchestra at Heanor Empire for 23 years until the coming of “Talkies” caused it to be disbanded. A further facet of his career was as leader of the augmented orchestra, which accompanied the Savoy Opera production of the late Heanor Amateur Operatic Society in which capacity he gave pleasure to many hundreds of listeners, and earned high praise from the professional musicians who produced the operas.
Mr Shaw was a popular soloist and performed at many important social functions over a large area. His wide and varied activities also included orchestral work at seaside resorts and theatres, whilst no church or chapel anniversary was complete without his presence. Many former pupils will remember his prowess as a teacher, which brought out the best to those of high musical ability, whilst allowing those of lesser gifts to taste some degree of pleasure, which they might never have otherwise attained. Yet a further aspect of his work was his part in a string Quartette, which gave classical recitals for some years.
The interment took place on Monday, at Marlpool Cemetery, the service in the Chapel and the last rites at the graveside being conducted by the Rev. Philip du Feu Minister of Heanor Wesley Church.

If Dorothy Edna did marry a Mr Bamber - Bamber is not a common name in the Heanor area - so there may be more possibilities of finding a connection through the Bamber name.

Harry Bamber was head boy at HGS in 1941 -who knows maybe a connection -and my friend thinks he became a school teacher in the local area.

There are only 2 Bambers living in Heanor listed in the local telephone directory

Thank you so much for the death notice for Enoch Shaw. There was mention in one of the letters about his musical activities.

If anyone would like to read a sampling of the letters written in 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1951, how would I go about posting them?

The name Enoch Shaw didn't click when I typed up Sharon's enquiry, but he used to teach the violin at Heanor Technical School in the early days (around 1907).

Welcome to the site Sharon.

Posting pictures, etc., is really not easy. There is an explanation as to how to do it here.

Hi, I didn't receive an email through the list. I haven't sent any through the list yet, but will try soon.

Got to go pack. We aren't sure when we will be leaving March 4th or 10th. We will stay in London for a few days working the repositories there and then on to Derbyshire.

Thanks to all who have sent information. I will sort it all out and see how it fits.

Suz

There used to be a Moon family live round the back of the puzzle when I lived in Langley Mill 1941-1955 Jack Moon worked for Frank Sisson as a builders labourer.

There was also a Mr&Mrs Bamber lived on Edward Street in between Les Osbournes and Bill Walkers, they used to ride a tandem and later upgraded to a Messerschmitt Bubble car.

The tandem fits right in. Nellie mentioned that her daughter and son-in-law rode a tandem bike. April 14, 1946 "...Dorothy Edna and here husband have just set off for (Langley Mill) their home on their tandem cycle; Little Frankie has also just left us for home and bed, he celebrated his 9th birthday recently. Many thanks for stamps you sent him." I don't know who Frankie is.

Also "We have had Jack Brown from Breach Cottage for tea, my youngest sister's son. He is 18 and works down the mine as an electrician."

Thank you for little pieces and big pieces to the puzzle. Sharon

Death of Heanor Resident
Mr W. R. Bamber
The death took place on Friday morning at his home, Wilmot St Heanor of Mr William Rowland Bamber who was highly esteemed by a large number of residents in the area.

He was a lover of good music and his quiet and retiring disposition endeared him to many people. Mr Bamber was a well read man in the history of the district, which in his younger days he travelled and often walked 40 miles in one day into the heart of the country he loved Derbyshire.
