If we're talking about the present Ashfields Nursing Home, then the last private owner I can recall (in the 1970's) was local accountant Ron Palfreyman. I lived opposite at that time.

It definitely isn't the house half way up Mansfield Road. And it definitely isn't on Elmsfield Avenue. (The Origin of Heanor Street Names only says that Elmsfield Avenue was named after the house "which occupies land in this area".)

However, I do now have a definite location, from a trusted source, though have still not seen it myself.

The house is still standing, though it is now three dwellings, and is on Grace Crescent, at the top of Mansfield Road. I'll be calling in tomorrow to take a look!

I looked on the aerial map and it looks to be the first house on the right, before the newer houses on Grace Crescent.

Ice

No, I've not had chance yet - what with my shifts and rushing round printers with the new book - but I hope to get there over the next couple of days.

The beautiful grounds of “Elmsfield House”, lent by Mr and Mrs J. Holbrook will,

it is Mr J Holbrooks garden and house, but I also read a article about the open day (not enough time to copy it)but it said that being a new garden and open for the first time so maybe the house was new too?

10th April 1913
Heanor Observer
Street widening
This was a large report and I only copied this part:
“The first dangerous position occurs at “The Dene” it is proposed here to set back the wall and palisades in front of Mr Fletchers house, and also to put Mr Holbrook’s new wall at “Elmsfield House” further back, also to take down the stables opposite.”
