replied on: 4/4/2008 12:32:59 AM basford is a town in nottinghamshire -but basford registration district is an area which covers part of Nottinghamshire and part of Derbyshire (heanor comes within basford registration district) Remember when you get certificates the place of registration is NOT the town/village of birth. The loughborough born children will probably be registered in Loughborough district (or another leicestershire district) The Hucknall b ones will probably be registered in Mansfield district. |

replied on: 4/4/2008 3:52:20 AM Thanks I remember my Dad telling me something similar, in a general sense why did families move around so much in the east midlands, was this quite normal, my previous research of the family shows (if it is correct??) that the lougborough area was where they stayed and resided at least until Thomas and Mary moved to Derbyshire around the 1860'-70's!! Swanick, Heanor, Hucknall and Creswell do they have something in common perhaps in terms of types of employment??? Frank's West SNR kids were a mix of births aswell, my Grandfather Frank Jnr and his brothers Fred and Lawrence I'm pretty sure were all born in Creswell, which I believe is closer to the Yorks border? Frank and Fred West were both Prof soldiers in WW2 Middle East theatre, Jack youngest was killed in Sicily, Body never recovered...I cna't fnd much on them, my family has very few of that generation left, My Dda has had veyr little contact with his cousins, he knows some exist in Notts and Derby, but we don't know where...will be good to look into that down the track, I have to start transferring all this data inot my Ancestry tree very soon, I have really hit the Jackpot with you Sue Are you an amateur or professional? |

replied on: 4/4/2008 9:57:29 AM I am not professional!!!! LOL ! I just love local history and family history -as most of us do on this site. There are lots of members of this site who are far more knowledgable than me. On here there are lots of people with local knowledge who all pull together under the guidance of Robert. Your family probably moved intitially to an area here FWKnitting was a big part of the local industry -then when they went into coal mining they would move to different mines - they moved a lot more in those days than we realise. Cresswell as a "Mining Village" -and collieries would have their own housing available One line of my family moved around with the collieries- also a lot moved to Sheffield Yorks with the steel industry. So it wasn't unusual |

replied on: 4/4/2008 1:06:18 PM Sue got a photo here my Dad sent me ...if I can get it posted on the site, I'd like your opinion of the era it was taken... Dad says he was always told it was 'Charles West', b 1809 Loughborough...the family story goes that he was 99years when he died...I think we can say that wasn't quite right, all records indicate as you have previously shown he was around 82 when he passed our shores....looking at his dress I'm more inclined to think it is probably Thomas West (Snr) born 1835 Loughborough...for clues the photo on the back has "Gales Studios LTD, Branch 27 Clumber St Nottingham...it looks like it was a postcard photo .... If I can get it posted on the site...(sorry I'm such a IT clutz) we might get few people willing to wage a a sportsmen bet as to when it was taken. |

replied on: 4/5/2008 1:01:13 PM Thanks Jenny, Better than I could trace before, at least I have a secondary source and a date now! Can you tell me...how does one confirm or deny IGI member records that have been sourced from the internet like family search...becuause my entire family is british and I'm all the way over here in Australia and none of my living relies live in the counties of interest how best does one search records before 1837? Until I found this forum, it was extremely difficult to be positive about linking names in my tree? |

replied on: 4/5/2008 8:51:24 PM The IGI on familysearch is quite reliable if it is an extracted record (which gives the source). it is not complete but more information is bring added all the time. Member submitted records should be treated with caution - on many occasions they are nothing more than a guess - on other occasions they turn out to be accurate -but only after checking church/parish records etc |
