Shipley Mining Accident - Straw

A query from Canada - could just as easily fitted in the Family History topice.

"I am looking into our family history.

We cannot find any details/information of our Grandfather who was named STRAW and worked/was killed in the Shipley Collery early in the 20th Century we believe.

He lived in Cotmanhay, Ilkeston and had a large family of girls, my mother, Martha, the youngest. We would love to find some information on this family member, we all live overseas."

I have asked the enquirer to try and give us a bit more information (e.g. first name, rough date, etc.)

Further from Canada:

"Best I can do, with the very limited information I can assemble, is that our Grandfather's name was Sam Straw. He was living in Cotmanhay, Ilkeston area, and he was a working miner at the Shipley Coal Mine when he was killed in a mining accident sometime in the early 1900's time period. He was the father of 13 or 14 children!

My family's father was George Leslie Willgoose and our mother's name, prior to her marriage, was Martha Straw, the youngest member of their family."

The death took place at Milnhay on Sunday evening of Mr Samuel Shaw at the ripe old age of 90 years. Born at Belper in August 1810 Mr Shaw had thus lived under four sovereigns. In his younger days he was engaged as a potter, but retired many years ago, on leaving Belper he resided at Marehay for about twenty years and ten years ago he removed to Langley Mill, He took no part in public life beyond being a Sunday school teacher while at Belper. He leaves a son and two daughters. The funeral took place at Ripley today.
