replied on: 4/10/2008 3:43:48 PM Vodka and lime -that brings back memories. The "in" drink! I guessed it would be late sixties for a youngster visiting the Durham Ox In the 50's (kept by a member of my family for years )youngsters would not go into that pub-it was an older persons pub - most exciting thing to happen was to get double 6 at dominoes. In the 60s it was taken over by a younger landlord -and they even started to serve chicken and chips in a basket -how trendy can you get??? My early teens were spent in Heanor Milk bar, Elliots, Town Hall dances , Heanor Welfare -and occasionally the Rays Arms (cos they never asked your age there!) Cricks Club, Premier Ilkeston, -that was before the wages went up and Nottingham nightlife beckoned. Nightclubs opening from 2pm sat through til 2 pm Sunday! I moan nowadays cos I can't sleep - it was a bonus to be able to stay awake in those days!!!! |

replied on: 4/10/2008 4:31:48 PM On the subject of "ladies' drinks," I remember going with my brother and his girlfriend to the Sportsman in Codnor, some time in the mid/late 1970's. The girlfriend was refused a pint as they wouldn't serve them to ladies! I can't see that happening now. |

replied on: 4/10/2008 10:40:50 PM In the 60's I can recall nights out at the Regal in Ripley dancing round our handbags. This was weeknights. Saturday and Sunday nights were spent going on the bus to Nottingham to the clubs there, the Dungeon, The Beachcomber, The Brit, The Boat and The Union club (at Trent Bridge) and occasionally The Dancing Slipper (West Bridgford) and the Palais. Vodka and Lime was my drink of choice (and still is). Also Babycham and Cherry B and Port and Lemon occasionally. It was very sophisticated to get a cherry in the drink with a little paper umbrella - we thought that was very cool. A night out at the pictures was either the Empire or the Rex at Eastwood. |

replied on: 4/11/2008 6:23:39 PM Cherry B and Babycham still going, Ice. Cherry B got you legless in no time - there was also "Pony" Germanrockstar - our paths may have crossed - the Dungeon - remember when the licencing laws insisteed to open late a meal had to be provided - so you were given a tray of limp lettuce on arrival. The Beachcomber The Boat -all bring back memories - the Regal I used to go to while still in school.(tut tut) I used to buy a packet of Sobrane cocktail cigarettes on payday - gold filter and different coloured cigarettes - I used to just smoke the ones which matched my outfit -and nail polish!!!! Oh boy -was I cool????? |

replied on: 4/11/2008 10:22:02 PM That's the one, sadly now a housing estate The Premier had a Sunday licence and was just about the only local source of entertainment on the Sabbath in the 1960's. There was a tobacconist-cum-sweet shop on Market Street where we bought our fags. It was run by an ancient old lady with a beard, who we called 'Devil Woman' after the Marty Robbins song which was popular at the time. We used to get a pass-out (hands stamped) and drift over to the White Lion for an illegal pint or two before catching the five past eleven C6 to Heanor. Oh happy days. Anyone remember Ray Dane and the Diamonds? They were a regular group at the Premier, the lead singer was Trevor Gill from Eastwood. |
