A query received:

"I am interested in any information on my grandfather John Pounder Radford b1882 and my great grandfather Frederick Radford b1862 and his wife Sarah Ann Pounder b 1859. They all appeared to come from farming families in the Shipley Gate, Heanor and Mapperley area. They may have been in services; carpenter; labourer."

The date of John Pounder does indicate the farming family of Park Lane, Mapperley Derbyshire. A John Pounder is buried in the churchyard - he farmed 200 acres. That Pounder family were friends of the Squires Mundy and were responsible for much work on the Nutbrook Canal - installing locks - constructing Mapperley reservoir etc.

Unfortunately there are many John Pounders (sometimes spelled Pownder). I cannot find any details in my records but the assorted Shipley branches seem to originate with my Gt Gt Grandfather John Pounder b 1790 of Muker Yorkshire. Many lived in Shipley Wood which was a small hamlet about 200 yards West of the still extent Phil Walkers Pond.

I will keep the name by me and should anything come to light will let you know.

A follow-up question, from the same enquirer:

"I wonder if I could add one further query. Could anyone help me with a Wheatley Family from Elm Farm. Cossall. The family also owned an old tudor cottage across the road from the farm. it was a big family and the overspill of all the daughters were housed in this cottage!"

This may help bennerley connect the pounders

This is what I believe to be the family

Sarah Ann pounder married Frederick radford - marriage reg Sept qtr 1881 Belper district (so possibly a Smalley marriage?)

Sarah Ann Pounder b. c. 1859 Smalley
parents john Pounder c. 1824 Shipley
and hannah b. Ilkeston
John was a farmer in Smalley and then in mapperley (1871 census) -children b. Shipley, ilkeston, Smalley

In Mapperley they possibly farmed Church farm, manor Farm or mapperley farm - going from the enumerater's walk in the census it possibly was Church farm (not a farm now) as they are entered after the Derbyshire family - who lived on the corner of main St (or Town St as it was possibly called then)-but this is just a guess.

Frederick Radford b Micklover
it seems Frederick was the son of John Radford b. Micklover - 1851/61 Silk weaver, 1871 labourer married Emma b. Retford (possibly Emma was John's 2nd wife -and possibly only the mother of Frederick and sister Ruth.
1871 frederick was living at home in Micklover and was working as an indoor farm servant
by 1881 Frederick's occupation was Carpenter and he was lodging in mapperley Village in one of the lodge Houses on Shipley Rd (what is now the road through Shipley Country park ) with the oldershaw family -that's probably where he met Sarah ann

If this is the correct family and the enquirer requests what kind of information he/she is looking for, we may be able to help further.

There were several Wheatley families in Cossall 1841-51 which particular head of family are we looking for - most probably they are all related somewhere down the line.
there was an Albert Wheatley who ended up in Ilkeston
Any more information?
And what sort of information is required?

After several attempts at registering for Chatarea, my correspondent has give up and has sent her replies/queries to me. So, here goes...

"BENNERLEY.
Thank you for your help.
To broaden out the Pounder Family; John Pounder b 1823/4 married Hannah b 1825/6 Would you know Hannah's Surname? They appeared to have the following children; John Henry b1857, Sarah Ann b 1859 (my grt grandmother), Samuel b 1863, Hannah E b 1865, Albert b 1868.
Armed with this information do you still think the family lived at Park Lane Farm, Mapperley? And is this the farm that looked after all the pit ponies? Thanks again.

SUZARD. Thank you for your respnse. The info on my grandfather's army papers seems to tie up , even to the hereditary varicose veins!
You ask for more on the Wheatley family: My mother's mother was Sarah Wheatley b1884 - she married John Pounder Radford. Her brother's and sister's were Everard, William, Ethel, Robert, Mabel, Fanny, Percy, and Olive. Would you have info on William and Robert? (The others i have a bit of info). Their parents were Joseph Wheatley and Julia Boam from Cossall. Julias father may have been the local blacksmith (Cornelious Boam) - and Joseph's trade was a "Runner On ". What is this? Something to do with the coalmining industry? Did he lead the pit horses underground?
Phoned Derby Archives and they were useless. Going back to the Wheatley Family 1880 onwards - did they all live at Elm Farm; was it a tenant farm; what happened to it?
Does the name Zalasinski mean anything in the Cossal area? My mother said we were connected - perhaps family friends?

Also, John Pounder Radford worked with Vic Hallam in his early carpentry days so I will be reading your article on Vic.

I've just written a 150 page book on my Father but as you can see I have found very little on my Mother's side.

Await with expectation."

Runner on is listed in a glossary dated 1883.
The entry is cross referred to the entry for bottomer. This is quote the person who loads the cages at the pit bottom, and gives the signals to bank unquote.
