Local Pit Closures
posted on: 4/26/2008 12:58:32 AM

R&H Aug 6 1965

Heanor, Ripley and Alfreton will be treated as development areas by the Government as a result of plans to close three important collieries in the district, said mr Raymond Fletcher M.P. for the division on Wednesday .....
Pit closures in the district will include Coppice Colliery (closing April 1969), Woodlands Drift Mine (April 1968), and Denby Hall ( expected to be worked out by 1969 and merged with the nearby Denby-Drury Lowe)
In all 2000 miners are expected to be made redundant at the three pits by 1970.
In the whole of Derbyshire 6000 miners are likely to lose their jobs in the next few years when collieries close because coal reserves are exhausted.

The family moved from Marlpool to New Ollerton late 1966 as a result of the closure program. The NCB produced a booklet outlining the benefits to be had by moving to the Nottinghamshire collieries. It had the title of Five to Three with a blue cover with a clock face showing the time at five minutes to three. The connection being that Heanor and district pits made up No 5 Area and North Notts pits made up No 3 Area of the East Midlands Division.

My father was a blacksmith/shaftman at Coppice and would have been one of the last people to ride the shafts of Mapperley, Woodside and Coppice pits.

Bailey Brook closed 1938
During the 1950's Myself and Tommy Madeley
a Deputy used to crawl down a very Narrow Tunnel from 8's main gate at New Langley Colliery into Bailey Brook pit bottom. There we would start up the pumps to stop the water flooding into the Langley Workings
