Shorthose/Knighton families, Cotmanhay
posted on: 6/2/2008 6:37:53 PM

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help out there? My ancestor John Shorthose (b.1791-d.1877) who lived at 4 Church St, Cotmanhay was married to a Catherine Knighton (b.1794 d.1861). They were married 19/7/1824 at Christchurch, Cotmanhay. I am desperately trying to find out more information about this Catherine Knighton and I know that this surname if very common in the area - even next door neighbours in Church St. were Knightons, but I just cannot find any evidence of her birth and who her parents might have been. Any help/advice anyone can give would be much appreciated. Thanks

Have you checked the marriage record to see if Catherine was a spinster or widow when she married? -as she was in her 30s when she married John (if my maths are correct!)

A lot of the Ilkeston Knightons seem to have been baptised in the Independant church - maybe that is worth a look -and of course for adult baptisms

Many thanks for your reply. Is there anyway I can check the marriage records on line for 1824 and or the Independent Church? I live in Kent so dont have any opportunity to get up North to do any research in person. Regards

Unfortunately -there is nothing I know of on line - except of course the IGI. -I will put it in my list of "to dos"-but it may take some time -I'm tied up with family births, marriages and parties until the end of the month.

In Phillimores Marriage register for Heanor John Shorthose married Hannah Bolton 13 Apr 1820.

I can't find another marriage for John Shorthose in Heanor or Ilkeston.

Hi
I have Letter written by grandson John Shorthose of Church St Ilkeston in 1920 to my gg father William Byron Shorthose. He mentions his grandfather was bought up by Uncle Henry and apprenticed to wheelright in Burton on Trent. Then set up business in Ilkeston. Married Catherine Knighton and had 2 sons & 3 daughters who lived to be of age.
Regards
Janet Shorthose

Hi Janet, I have only just found this messsage from you. I would be very interested to chat to you more. By strange coincidence I think you are the same Janet in Australia that I tried to contact very recently, but the email address which I had just bounces back! I was wanting to give you info about Henhurst House which you were asking about some years ago on a message board. I am sure you are the same Janet. Please can you email me?
Regards Christina
