By 1901 he was a Farmer living at Codnor Hall. The questions are:- Was Codnor Hall as grand as it sounds, and is it still there? I can't find any reference to it. How would he have leaped up the social ladder that quickly? |

Dr Thomas Starbuck Woolley bought the “Hall Farm” and kept a room for surgery. His wife Alice Woolley planted the elm trees round the estate, which included the recreation Ground. The estate was sold by Mrs Woolley to the Butterley Company in November 1913, and the Butterley Company sold the land, which is now the recreation Ground, to Heanor Urban District Council in the early 1930’s number 14 Alfreton Rd, Codnor is called “Elm Villa” after the elm trees planted by Mrs Woolley at the bottom of the garden. and at Crosshill Farm Margaret Woolley was the last of the family to reside at “Crosshill House Farm” and when she died was buried at Crosshill on the 8th Jan 1931 aged 98 years. The estate at Crosshill then became under the ownership of Mr Charles Hill who left Mill Farm at Loscoe Grange to farm at Crosshill. |

replied on: 7/21/2008 10:30:40 PM Thanks again Jenny. It seems then that it wasn't a grand "Hall" more like a large farm. I think that we can assume that the farm was owned by the Woolley's in 1901, and that Luke Gill was a tennant farmer. It would explain his apparent rise in social standing. The French Horn rang a bell, I have a rellative on West Hill that worked there for a number of years. Jenks |

replied on: 7/24/2008 4:52:38 AM This Margaret Woolley B: 1878, was the Daughter of Thomas Starbuck Woolley B: 1838 and Alice Trotter. This Margaret of 1878 was named after her fathers sister, Margaret, B: 1832. The Margaret of 1832 was the daughter of John Woolley, b;1795 and Ann Unknown. I never knew their place was called Codnor Hall. Any other details out there? |

replied on: 8/29/2008 11:48:24 AM 1963 Ripley Heanor News CODNOR HALL FARM Photo Another old Codnor landmark is fast disappearing with the demolition of the Hall Farm, which has been a familiar feature of the Market Place scene for close upon 200 years. The building was a typical farmhouse of the 18th century and was for many years owned by the Stirland's, owners of considerable land and property in the village. It has an interesting link with the Pentrich Revolution for in 1817 as the revolutionaries marched through Codnor, Brandrith, their leader, called at Hall Farm and demanded men and weapons. He succeeded in getting two farm labourers to join him and they took pitchforks for weapons. Another unusual feature of the farmhouse is that many of the windows are bricked up, as the result of a tax, which was imposed on the number of windows. After the death of Mr Stirland, a Dr Woolley of Heanor, bought the house and fields and turned it into a doctor’s residence. It was used as a surgery by various doctors for over 70 years. Following Dr. Woolley the house was tenanted by a farmer named Gill, followed about the turn of the century by Matthew Steeples and the Parrs, who farmed there until 1947, when the Butterley Co Ltd, the owners, took over the farm for their own use. When the farm has been pulled down, the site will be used for the rebuilding of the French Horn Inn, which now stands a little further down the road. Jenny |
